Meow

A meow /miˈaʊ/, also spelled miaow, is the most familiar vocalization of cats. A meow can be assertive, plaintive, friendly, bold, welcoming, attention soliciting, demanding, or complaining. It can even be silent, where the cat opens its mouth but does not vocalize. Adult cats do not meow to each other, and so adult meowing to human beings is likely to be a post-domestication extension of mewing by kittens.

Spelling

In English, the first use of the spelling "meow" was in 1842. Before that, the word could be spelled "miaow", "miau", or "meaw".

Language differences

Different languages have correspondingly different words for the "meow" sound, including miau (Belarusian, Croatian, Hungarian, Finnish, Lithuanian, Malay, German, Polish, Russian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish and Ukrainian), mňau (Czech), meong (Indonesian), njäu (Estonian), niau (Ukrainian), niaou (νιάου, Greek), miaou (French), nyā (ニャー, Japanese), miao (喵, Mandarin Chinese, Italian), miav/miao or mjav/mjau (Danish, Swedish and Norwegian), mjá (Icelandic), ya-ong (야옹, Korean), میاؤں / Miyāʾūṉ (Urdu),miaŭ (Esperanto) and meo-meo (Vietnamese). In some languages (such as Chinese 貓, māo), the vocalization became the name of the animal itself.

Meow (cat)

Meow (c. 2010 – May 5, 2012), also known as Meow the fat cat, was a male domestic cat who attracted international attention when an animal shelter publicized efforts to slim him down, in an attempt to have him adopted. However, Meow died of lung failure two weeks after entering the animal shelter, on May 5, 2012. He was the world's heaviest cat at his time of death, weighing 39.6 pounds (18.0 kilograms).

Weight

Domestic cats are similar in size to the other members of the genus Felis, typically weighing between 8.8 pounds (4.0 kg) and 11 pounds (5.0 kg). However, Meow weighed 39.6 pounds (18.0 kilograms), making him the heaviest cat in the world at the time, although not the heaviest on record. Himmy, a cat from Australia, weighed 46.8 pounds (21.3 kilograms) at his death during his tenth year, in 1986.Guinness World Records has since stopped recording the world's heaviest pets in order to discourage deliberate overfeeding.

Meow, being the world's heaviest cat at the time, occasionally appeared on television shows in the United States. One was Anderson Live, which was hosted by American television personality Anderson Cooper. Meow was featured in an episode of Anderson Live on April 30, 2012, with Cooper carrying the fat cat.

Meow! by Katy Perry

Meow! by Katy Perry is a fragrance created by American singer Katy Perry and Gigantic Parfums. The fragrance, released in December 2011 at Nordstrom, is a similar concept to her first fragrance "Purr".

Conception and background

After the success of her previous fragrance Purr, Katy decided along with Gigantic Parfums to design her second fragrance. She said "It's a sister fragrance. Purr to me was a little bit more floral, and Meow is a little bit more sweet. It was probably because of the California Dreams Tour that it was more of the confectionery world, because everything I've seen for the last year has been like cotton-candy scented or huge peppermints or massive gummy bears." Perry also described the perfume as "edible".

Packaging and scent

The scent of the perfume is known to be more "sweet" than its previous bottle. The bottle is a cat-shaped bottle which is basically the same as its previous bottle, other than that it is light pink and the collar is the letter "M". Meow's scent has ingredients including pear, honeysuckle, and vanilla. The fragrance also features small scents of musk and amber as well.
