BattleMech

BattleMechs (often abbreviated 'Mechs) are large walking war machines that feature prominently in the fictional universe of BattleTech. 'Mechs, which are generally either bipedal or quadrupedal in configuration, are controlled by human pilots and can thus be classified as mecha.

Origins

BattleMechs debuted in FASA Corporation's BattleTech, a board game of futuristic armored combat played with dice, counters and paper record sheets on a map of hexagonal territories. The game's first edition in 1984 was titled BattleDroids and featured mecha based directly on those in the Japanese animated television series Macross and other Japanese animation from the late '70s and early '80s. Legal impediments with George Lucas over the use of the term "droid" forced the name of the game to change in the second edition to BattleTech. This, combined with legal troubles with Playmates, led FASA in the 1990s to remove all images of these early designs from subsequent published material. Since FASA retained the rights to all aspects of the 'Mechs except for their visual depictions, they continued to use the 'Mechs and their stats, but did not print images of them until Technical Readout: Project Phoenix canonized new artwork for the designs. This fact led fans to dub these early 'Mechs the "Unseen," while their new look is colloquially referred to as the "Reseen."

Mecha

Mecha may refer to a science fiction genre that centers on robots or machines controlled by people. These machines vary greatly in size and shape, but are distinguished from vehicles by their humanoid or biomorphic appearance. Different subgenres exist, with varying connotations of realism. The concept of Super Robot and Real Robot are two such examples found in Japanese anime. The term may also refer to real world piloted humanoid robots / non-humanoid robotic platforms, either currently in existence or still on the drawing board (i.e. at the planning or design stage). Alternatively, in the original Japanese context of the word (see Characteristics), 'mecha' may refer to mobile machinery/vehicles (including aircraft) in general, manned or otherwise.

Characteristics

The word "mecha" (メカ meka) is an abbreviation first used in Japanese of the word "mechanical". In Japanese, mecha encompasses all mechanical objects, including cars, guns, computers, and other devices, and the term "robot" (ロボット robotto) or "giant robot" to distinguish limbed vehicles from other mechanical devices. Outside of this usage, it has become associated with large robots with limbs or other biological characteristics.

Scrap-Iron

Scrap-Iron is a fictional character from the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline, comic books and cartoon series. He is Cobra's anti-armor specialist and debuted in 1984.

Profile

Scrap-Iron is methodical and precise. Imperfection in any form repels him. His primary military specialty is tank destroyer. Scrap-Iron was apparently a product designer for Destro's armaments company, carrying out initial field testing on all new armor-piercing munitions and sub-munitions. His area of specialization is remote-launched, laser-guided, rocket-propelled piezo-electric fused anti-tank weapons.

Phoenix Guard

The members of the Phoenix Guard were Cobra agents in disguise, but for Cobra Commander's elaborate ruse to succeed, each member of the team needed doctored military records and manufactured personal histories. Scrap-Iron's fabricated identity was Mech, real name Timothy P. Janes, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mech's specialties were explosive ordnance, demolitions, information technology and engineering. He received basic training at Fort Benning, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training at Redstone Arsenal and Eglin Air Force Base. He also completed Airborne School at Fort Benning, and Air Assault School at Fort Campbell. He was the team's explosives ordnance and demolitions expert.

Crash

by: Mesh

See the vapours fading
As they stare into the night
Every time
Its getting harder
To be buttoned up so tight
Don't do anything to us today
(You're only flesh and bone, you'll really never know)
There's nothing left to take away
(You're only flesh and bone, you'll really never know)
I know the crash is coming
Cause I smell the fuel in the morning
I hear the engines stop
But I'll find my own way down
I hear the sleeper's waking
As they stare into the sky
All our lives
The rivets breaking
As we struggle up so high
Don't do anything to us today
(You're only flesh and bone, you'll really never know)
There's noone left
Who wants to stay
(You're only flesh and bone, you'll really never know)
I know the crash is coming
Cause I smell the fuel in the morning
I hear the engines stop
But I'll find my own way down
I see the takers taking
And we live it all again
Every time a little closer
To the truth without the pain
Don't do anything to us today
(You're only flesh and bone, you'll really never know)
There's nothing left to play the game
(You're only flesh and bone, you'll really never know)
I know the crash is coming
Cause I smell the fuel in the morning
I hear the engines stop
But I'll find my own way down
(You'll really never know)
I know the crash is coming
Cause I smell the fuel in the morning
I hear the engines stop
