Matthew Kelly

Matthew Kelly (born David Allan Kelly, 9 May 1950) is an English Olivier-award winning actor and presenter. Having been trained as a theatre actor, he first came to public prominence as a television presenter of ITV light entertainment shows such as Game for a Laugh, You Bet! and Stars in Their Eyes. In the 2000s he returned to acting, appearing in several West End productions, while also acting in some television roles.

Early life

Kelly was born in Urmston, Lancashire. As a child, he lived on Primrose Avenue in the town and became interested in acting when at the Urmston Musical Theatre, most notably playing the role of Louis in a production of The King and I in 1963. He continues to be President of the theatre group.

After 1961, Kelly went to Urmston Grammar School. He trained as an actor at the Manchester Metropolitan School of Theatre (formerly Manchester Polytechnic) and joined in a theatre group which included Julie Walters and Pete Postlethwaite. After graduation, he made his professional debut at the Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl. After this debut he appeared regularly at Liverpool's Everyman Theatre. He is a former member of the Workers' Revolutionary Party.

Matthew Kelly (musician)

Matthew Kelly, also known as Matt Kelly, is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He plays guitar and harmonica. Kelly is best known for being the leader of the rock band Kingfish, and for his association with Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead.

Career

Matthew Kelly began his musical career in the late 1960s, playing harmonica with some well known blues artists, including Mel Brown, Champion Jack Dupree, Johnny Lee Hooker, and T-Bone Walker.

During this period, Kelly was also involved in the burgeoning rock music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. He played electric guitar and harmonica in several different psychedelic rock bands, along with fellow South Bay musicians Dave Torbert and Chris Herold.

Subsequently, Kelly lived in England for a number of months, and was a member of the rock band Gospel Oak. Upon his return to California, he renewed his association with Dave Torbert, who was then playing bass in the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Kelly would also sometimes hang out with a boyhood friend of his, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. During this period Kelly occasionally performed as a guest musician with the New Riders or the Dead. He appeared on one track of the 1973 Dead album Wake of the Flood.

Matthew Kelly (footballer)

Matthew Kelly (born 2 July 1971) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Adelaide in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Kelly was originally picked up by Collingwood with the 84th selection of the 1989 VFL Draft, but decided to stay with Norwood. His family had some history in South Australian football, with his grandfather Maurie Arbon being a North Adelaide premiership player.

A year later, he was signed by Adelaide as part of their original squad, to enter the AFL in 1991. Kelly, who was troubled by knee injuries for much of his career, was mostly used in the midfield or as a flanker. He had to wait until round 16 of the 1991 season to make his debut, where he had 13 disposals in a loss to Hawthorn at Waverley Park. His only other appearance came at Kardinia Park in 1992, against Geelong.

Matthew Kelly (The Autumns)

Matthew Kelly is the vocalist and guitarist of the indie rock band the Autumns.

Kelly's output with the Autumns began in 1997 with the EP Suicide at Strell Park and the full-length The Angel Pool.

In addition to his work with the Autumns, Kelly appeared on all three albums of the experimental rock band the Sound of Animals Fighting, providing vocals on "Act II: All is Ash or the Light Shinning Through It", "My Horse Must Lose", "The Heretic", and "On the Occasion of Wet Snow". Kelly also performed with the band during their four live performances throughout California, and appeared on their live DVD We Must Become the Change We Want to See. Kelly opened the show performing "The Heretic" a cappella, then later sang and played guitar during "My Horse Must Lose". During "This Heat", Kelly, along with Anthony Green, Craig Owens, and Bradley Bell, danced on stage, dressed in identical masks and black cloaks.

Kelly was a participant in Revolution on Canvas, the first volume of the Warner Books compendium, submitting lyrics along with his band mate Frankie Koroshec.

Family Life

Matthew Kelly was born on July 12, 1973 in Sydney, Australia and is the fourth of eight boys. He was raised Catholic, but was “restless and discontent” in his faith until his later teen years, when a family friend encouraged him to look deeper into his faith. This family friend, a physician, challenged him to spend ten minutes each day in a church in prayer. After a few days, Kelly was encouraged to go to daily mass, where he truly began to connect more deeply with his faith.

Kelly married his wife Meggie in the spring of 2009. They have four children: Walter, Isabel, Harry, and Ralph.
