Matthew "Matt" Edward Barkell Clarke (born 22 September 1996) is an English professional footballer who plays for Portsmouth on loan from Ipswich Town, as a central defender or central midfielder.

Club career

Born in Barham, Suffolk, Clarke joined Ipswich Town academy as an U7 and signed a scholarship with the club in the summer of 2013. He was included in the main squad for the pre-season in the following year.

Clarke made his professional debut for the club on 12 August 2014, starting as a left back in a 0–1 Football League Cup away loss against Crawley Town. On 11 September he signed a two-year professional deal with the club.

In July 2015 Clarke went on a trial at Portsmouth, signing a six-month loan deal with the club on 3 August.

On 2 September 2015, Clarke signed a new two-year contract at Ipswich Town, contracting him to the club until June 2017.

Clarke's loan deal at Portsmouth was subsequently extended until the end of the season in January 2016.

Matthew Paul "Matt" Clarke (born 18 December 1980 in Leeds) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Conference North side Guiseley.

He started his professional career in 1998 with Wolverhampton Wanderers but was released after his first full season as a pro and without making a first team appearance. He went on to play for Halifax Town and Darlington before signing for Bradford City in 2006. He remained with The Bantams until 2010 before joining Maltese Premier League side Hibernians, during a three-year spell in Malta Clarke also played for Msida Saint-Joseph and Marsaxlokk.

Playing career

Early career

Clarke started his career as a trainee with Wolverhampton Wanderers but never made it to the first team appearance. Clarke signed for Halifax Town in 1999. He played 78 times and scored twice for Halifax.

Darlington

He then signed for Darlington in July 2004 following a trial at Manchester City the previous season. He was set to leave Darlington in May 2005 but following talks with manager David Hodgson he stayed at the club and was rewarded with the club captaincy.
