Mary River cod

The Mary River cod (Maccullochella mariensis) is a species of temperate perch native to the coastal Mary River system of southern Queensland, Australia. Mary River cod are one of Australia's most endangered freshwater fishes and are notable for being the most northerly of the four Maccullochella cods found or once found in coastal river systems of eastern Australia.

Description

The Mary River cod is a large fish recorded up to almost 40 kg and 120 cm in the early years of European settlement, but now are mostly less than 5 kg and 70 cm.

Very similar in appearance to Murray cod and eastern freshwater cod, they are a striking looking, golden-yellow to dark green or brown, deep-bodied fish with dark green to black mottling. Curiously, Mary River cod have a slightly shorter, thicker caudal peduncle (tail wrist) than the other cod species.

Conservation

The Mary River Cod is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is estimated to only occur in less than 30% of its historic range.

Mary River (Western Australia)

Mary River is a river in the Kimberley of Western Australia.

The headwaters of the river rise south of Mount Angelo, approximately 25 km south of Halls Creek. The river then flows in a westerly direction through Oollumarra Soak and discharges into Margaret River of which it is a tributary.

Mary River has nine tributaries including Laura River, Willy Willy Creek, Garden Creek, Hangman Creek and Janet Creek.

The river was named in 1884 when the area was explored by a government survey party led by Harry Johnston, who named it after his mother, Mary Johnston (1822-1893), the daughter of Marshall Waller Clifton and Elinor Bell.

The traditional owners of the areas around the river are the Djaru and Konejandi peoples.

The Mary River (Kabi: Moocooboola) is a major river system located in the South East and Wide Bay–Burnett regions of Queensland, Australia.

Course and features

The river rises at Booroobin in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, west of Landsborough. From its source, the Mary River flows north through the towns of Kenilworth, Gympie, Tiaro and Maryborough before emptying into the Great Sandy Strait, a passage of water between the mainland and Fraser Island, near the town of River Heads, 17 km (11 mi) south of Hervey Bay. The Mary River flows into the Great Sandy Strait, near wetlands of international significance recognised by the International agreement of the Ramsar Convention and thr UNESCO Fraser Island World Heritage Area, which attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Notable river crossings include the Dickabram Bridge, the Granville Bridge at Maryborough, and the Lamington Bridge.

From source to mouth, the Mary River is joined by nineteen tributaries, including the Tinana Creek, Munna Creek, Obi Obi Creek, Yabba Creek, Wide Bay Creek and the Susan River. The river descends 209 metres (686 ft) over its 291-kilometre (181 mi) course. The river's catchment area is 9,595 square kilometres (3,705 sq mi) and is bounded by the Conondale, Jimma and Burnett Ranges.
