Mary Pratt (painter)

Mary Frances Pratt, CC, RCA (née West) (born 15 March 1935 in Fredericton, New Brunswick) is a Canadian painter specializing in still life realist paintings. While her early works focus on domestic scenes, some of her later work take on a darker, more disturbing tone and have people as their subject matter. She lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland where she continues to paint and write.

The focus of her work is the ordinary household things one finds around the house: jars of jelly, apples, aluminum foil, brown paper bags. The style is bold and flamboyant, rendering their subject vivid and realistic. Because of this transformation of the mundane into something aesthetic, "she may have had more influence on shaping the way we see things than any Canadian painter since the Group of Seven".

Pratt's first solo exhibition was held at the Memorial University Art Gallery in St. John's in 1967. The first showing of her art outside Atlantic Canada was part of an exhibition at the Picture Loan Gallery in 1971 in Toronto. In 1973, Erindale College (Toronto) gave her a show of her own.

Mary Pratt (baseball)

Mary Pratt (born November 30, 1918) is a former pitcher who played from 1943 through 1947 in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She batted and threw left-handed.

Early life

Pratt was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts. She attended North Quincy High School. After graduation, she entered Sargent College and participated in various sports there, including basketball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, archery, and sailing. Pratt earned a degree in physical education in 1940.

AAGPBL career

In 1941, Pratt got a job teaching in Quincy. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League formed at around that time, and after the school year ended in 1943, Pratt joined the league as a member of the Rockford Peaches. She played in 24 games during her first season, going 5–11 on the mound and batting .235.

The following season, Pratt was transferred to the Kenosha Comets team. She immediately had her best season, winning 21 games and pitching a no-hitter, while leading the Comets to the league championship series. During this time, Pratt "was very effective using a controlled slingshot or windmill windup to get hitters out".
