Mary Miller

Mary Ellen Miller (born December 30, 1952) is an American art historian and academician specializing in Mesoamerica and the Maya.

Academic career

A native of New York State, Miller earned her A.B. degree from Princeton University and her Ph.D. from Yale in 1981 with a thesis titled The Murals of Bonampak, Chiapas Mexico. Miller joined the Yale faculty in 1981, and in 1998 was appointed as the Vincent Scully, Jr. Professor of the History of Art.

Miller served as the Master of Saybrook College from 1999 until the autumn of 2008, when she was both appointed as Sterling Professor and named the replacement of Peter Salovey as Dean of Yale College. She was the first woman to hold Yale College's highest office, and served as dean from December 2008 to June 2014. When Yale University President, Richard C. Levin, announced Dr. Miller's appointment as dean, he had nothing but praise for her: "Mary is the embodiment of what you look for in a Yale College dean," Levin said in an interview after the official appointment ceremony held in Luce Hall. "She is a magnificent scholar, a devoted teacher and a terrific master." Professor Miller cited a desire to return to academia as her reason for stepping down from the deanship position in 2014.

Mary U. Miller is an American fiction writer. She is the author of a collection of short stories entitled Big World. Her debut novel entitled The Last Days of California was published by Liveright. It is the story of a fourteen-year-old girl on a family road trip from the South to California, led by her evangelical father. By January 2014, Big World sold 3,000 copies and Last Days of California sold 25,000 copies.

Last Days of California was recommended by numerous newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the New York Times, and Oprah's Book Club.New York Times book critic Laurie Muchnick described her book as a "terrific first novel."Chicago Tribune critic Laura Pearson wrote that it had "vivid but unfussy prose, pitched perfectly to the attitudes and observations of a teenage girl adrift."Wall Street Journal critic Sam Sacks gave the book a mixed review, finding disappointment in that Miller's insight into characters did not extend to the subject of religious belief. Critic Josh Cook in the Star Tribune gave the book a mixed review, saying it had "plenty here" but that some scenes felt "amiss". Miller is a graduate of the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. In 2014 she is the John and Renée Grisham Writer-in-Residence at Ole Miss.

Mary Miller (soprano)

Mary Miller (died 8 January 1949) was an Australian singer. She showed early promise when, at age 14, she was ranked equal third in the South Street Contests held in Ballarat, Victoria, gaining 82 points. The winners (equal first) gained 84 points.

Mary Miller began her public career in about 1942 in Melbourne, Australia, as soprano. She subsequently appeared in many concerts, and was regularly featured on live broadcasts from Melbourne radio station 3KZ, and was broadcast nationally by the ABC from 1943. In February 1943, at age 16, she featured "on stage" at St Kilda Palais Pictures daily screenings of "Smilin' Through" that starred Jeanette MacDonald". In November 1945, she gave her first recital in Melbourne's Assembly Hall. In early 1946, she sang in Sydney Town Hall. She sang the role of Gilda in a concert performance of Rigoletto in 1947. She won the Sun Aria competition in 1948 with the highest score ever awarded, 95/100. She was immediately offered engagement at La Scala, Milan, Italy, but could not accept on account of her engagement to sing the role of Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, the opening opera of National Opera's summer season. A month after winning the competition, and 5 days before her National Opera engagement, she collapsed with severe abdominal pain, and was taken to hospital where an emergency operation found advanced cancer, and died on 8 January 1949, at the age of 23.

Mary Elizabeth Miller (born 27 December 1933) is an English television and stage actress, who was a founding member of the National Theatre Company in 1963.

Career

Early years

Mary Miller first appeared on television in 1959 as Alice Chandler in episode one of the 6-part series The Golden Spur, with Ronald Fraser and Oliver Reed. In the same year, she took the role of Ann Elsden in "The Talking Doll", the first instalment of the UK TV police drama, No Hiding Place.

In 1961, the playwright and novelist Peter Wildeblood was commissioned by Granada Television to produce an 11-part series featuring "up-and-coming acting talent, in plays by young authors, each actor or actress taking the lead role in turn". It was called The Younger Generation, and Miller appeared in eight of the plays.

In 1963, Miller became one of the 77 performers to be founding members of the National Theatre Company in its inaugural season under artistic director Sir Laurence Olivier.

The Protectors was a British television series, made by ABC (and not to be confused with the later British series from the 1970s, which began a run of 14 episodes in March 1964. It starred Andrew Faulds and Michael Atkinson as an ex-insurance investigator and ex-policeman who start up their own security firm to tackle crime. Miller appeared in May during the eighth instalment called "Freedom!", as Tamara.

Mary Miller is General and Artistic Director at the Bergen National Opera, in Bergen, Norway.

She began her career as concert violinist, working internationally until 1990. She became chief music critic of Scotland's national newspaper, The Scotsman, while directing the UK's first Nordic festival, based in Northern Scotland. She produced and presented for the BBC Radio 3 before leading the development of new work for English National Opera between 1998 and 2001. In 2001 she moved to the USA to direct the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in Connecticut, returning to Europe in 2005 as CEO and Artistic Director of the Stavanger2008,European Capital of Culture 2008. She wrote the Spanish city of Burgos's bid to be European Capital of Culture for 2016.
