Martin Green

Martin Green may refer to:

Lau (band)

Lau is a British folk band from both Scotland and England, formed in 2005. Named after an Orcadian word meaning "natural light", the band is composed of Kris Drever (guitar, vocals), Martin Green (accordion, piano, electronics) and Aidan O'Rourke (fiddle). To date, the band has released four studio albums and a live album.

Origins

Their debut album, Lightweights and Gentlemen, was released through Reveal Records in 2007. The band subsequently won the "Best Group" at the BBC Folk Awards, 2008 and went on to receive the award the next two years running.

Recordings

In December 2007, Lau recorded a live set at the Bongo Club, Edinburgh, and in early 2008, released Live. In 2008, they appeared at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Vancouver Festival and the Calgary Folk Festival.

In 2009 they released the album Arc Light. In 2010, the group recorded and released a five-track EP, Evergreen, in collaboration with singer-songwriter Karine Polwart.

The band released their third album Race The Loser in 2012. They also appeared on the BBC's Later... with Jools Holland show in 2012 where they played the tune 'Torsa'.

Martin Green (professor)

Martin Andrew Green AM ForMemRS (born 20 July 1948) is an Australian professor at the University of New South Wales who works on solar energy. He is editor-in-chief of the academic journal Progress in Photovoltaics.

Education

Green was born in Brisbane and was educated at the selective Brisbane State High School, graduated from University of Queensland and completed his PhD on a Commonwealth Scholarship at McMaster University in Canada, where he specialised in solar energy. In 1974, at the University of New South Wales, he initiated the Solar Photovoltaics Group which soon worked on the development of silicon solar cells. The group had their success in the early 80s through producing a 20% efficient silicon cell, which now has been improved to 25%.

Research

Green has published several books on solar cells both for popular science and deep research. The “buried contact solar cell” was developed at UNSW in 1984. Green also serves on the Board of the Sydney-based Pacific Solar Pty Ltd. (now known as CSG Solar), as Research Director. Green's portrait was painted with fellow scientist, Ross Garnaut for the Archibald Prize 2010. The painting was a finalist, losing to a portrait of Tim Minchin.
