Mark Warner

Mark Robert Warner (born December 15, 1954) is an American politician and the senior United States Senator from Virginia, in office since 2009. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Warner was the 69th Governor of Virginia, holding the office from 2002 to 2006, and is the honorary chairman of the Forward Together PAC. Warner delivered the keynote address at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Apart from politics, Warner is also known for his involvement in telecommunications-related venture capital during the 1980s; he founded the firm Columbia Capital.

In 2006 he was widely expected to pursue the Democratic nomination in the 2008 U.S. presidential elections; however, he announced in October 2006 that he would not run, citing a desire not to disrupt his family life. Warner was considered to be a potential vice presidential candidate, until he took himself out of consideration after receiving the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. Contested by another former governor of Virginia, Jim Gilmore, Warner won the election with 65% of the vote. Warner won re-election to the seat in 2014, defeating former Republican National Chairman Ed Gillespie, although his margin of only 17,000 votes was much narrower than expected.

Mark Warner is a musician from Nashville, Tennessee. Primarily a busy session guitarist, songwriter and producer who has contributed to many Rock and Pop music records.

Warner has received public acknowledgement by the music industry for his songwriting contributions. In 2001 he won the Paramount Music Summer Songwriting. He was also recognized for his lyrical accomplishments in the October 2001 edition of ASCAP Playback Magazine.

Warner credits several guitarists for providing his early musical influence, including Jimmy Page, Joe Perry and Peter Frampton. Later artistic influences include Tom Keifer and Jani Lane.

Warner may be best known for his extensive electric and acoustic work on the Allen Crane Broken Promises EP which was released on The Orchard Records in 2000 and features several notable artists including Cinderella drummer Fred Coury.

Warner has since written material for, and co-produced other artists alongside former Sony Records veteran engineer and producer Voytek Kochanek at Atlantis Studio Nashville.

Mark A. A. Warner (born 1964) is a Canadian international trade and competition (antitrust) lawyer previously with the Toronto firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin<ref name=O'Neill>Juliet O'Neill, "Six byelections likely to be called in the fall; September, November likely choices to avoid conflict with Ontario vote", Ottawa Citizen page A4, July 9, 2007</ref> and with the Government of Ontario.

Warner was chosen in February 2007 as the Conservative Party of Canada's candidate for the House of Commons in the riding of Toronto Centre by-election following the retirement of Bill Graham, but on October 30, the national council of the party replaced him as its candidate because of differences between Warner's campaign and the national party's campaign over social and urban issues.

Biography

Warner was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1968. His early childhood home was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he attended the Halifax Grammar School before his family moved to North Bay and then Pickering, Ontario. Warner earned a BA (Joint Honours) in Economics and Political Science at McGill University in Montreal and an MA in Economics from the University of Toronto before earning an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and an LLM in International & Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Centre. He is licensed to practice in Ontario, Canada and New York State, and was previously a Member of the Brussels Bar.
