Mark Anthony Neal

Mark Anthony Neal is an American author and academic. He is Professor of Black Popular Culture in the Department of African and African-American Studies at Duke University, where he won the 2010 Robert B. Cox Award for Teaching. Neal has written and lectured extensively on black popular culture, black masculinity, sexism and homophobia in Black communities, and the history of popular music.

Neal is the founder and managing editor of the blog NewBlackMan. He hosts the weekly webcast Left of Black in collaboration with the John Hope Franklin Center at Duke University. A frequent commentator for NPR, Neal contributes to several on-line media outlets, including Huff Post Black Voices and SeeingBlack.com.

What the Music Said: Black Popular Music and Black Public Culture (1998)

In this work Neal interprets the vast array of issues and overlapping instances that create black music and culture. This book argues that there are two separate worlds in which this type of blackness exists. The first is black music as it exists alone. Here it confines itself to black people and the "formal and informal institutions of the Black Public Sphere." It sings in juke joints and travels around the Chitlin' Circuit separate from the (white) outside world. The other side of black culture Neal speaks of is the one that outsteps the Black Public Sphere and stretches into the mainstream. In the book he labels this as a "tumultuous marriage between black cultural production and mass consumerism-one in which black agency is largely subsumed by market interests." From this standpoint, Neal fleshes out the issues and ramifications of such a problematic "marriage."

Mark Anthony (judoka)

Mark Anthony (born 13 October 1989 in Malang,Indonesia) is an Australian judoka. He lives in Geelong, Australia. He competed in the – 81kg event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and lost his first match against Mario Valles. Four years later, he took part in the – 90 kg tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics and lost in the repechage to Ilias Iliadis. He has been Australian Judo Champion on four occasions.

Mark Anthony is an American author who lives and writes in Colorado.

Career

Anthony wrote a number of novels based on Dungeons & Dragons published worlds, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Ravenloft. His first such novel was Crypt of the Shadowking in The Harpers series, and he has written several short stories as well.

Anthony had written a novel about Drizzt Do'Urden called "The Shores of Dusk" by the time Wizards of the Coast acquired TSR; however, Wizards opted not to publish Anthony's novel in favor of bringing back R. A. Salvatore to write about Drizzt, beginning with The Silent Blade (1998).

Anthony is best known for The Last Rune series, which he developed to explore the idea that reason and wonder need not exist in conflict. Recently he has written a trilogy under the pseudonym Galen Beckett, beginning with a novel The Magicians and Mrs. Quent, whose blurb, similarly to The Last Rune, claims that the book was written to given an answer to the question "what if there was a fantastical cause underlying the social constraints and limited choices confronting a heroine in a novel by Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte?". While the dust jacket also heralds The Magicians and Mrs. Quent as an "enchanting debut novel", it is not in fact the author's debut novel as he has published several works previously.
