Marine One

Marine One is the call sign of any United States Marine Corps aircraft carrying the President of the United States. It usually denotes a helicopter operated by Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1 "Nighthawks"), either the large VH-3D Sea King or the newer, smaller VH-60N "WhiteHawk". A Marine Corps aircraft carrying the Vice President has the call sign Marine Two.

History

The first use of helicopters for presidential transport was in 1957, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower traveled on a Bell UH-13J Sioux. The President needed a quick way to reach his summer home in Pennsylvania, as Air Force One could land at neither the White House nor the summer home. Eisenhower instructed his staff to look into alternative modes of transportation and a Sikorsky UH-34 Seahorse helicopter was commissioned. The early aircraft lacked the "creature comforts" found on its modern successors, such as air conditioning and toilets for in-flight use.

In 1958, the H-13 was replaced by the Sikorsky H-34, and in 1961 by the VH-3A. Not long after the mode of presidential transport was introduced, presidential aides asked the Marine Corps to look into the White House South Lawn as a helicopter landing zone. Ample room was present, and the protocol was established.

Marine One (Homeland)

"Marine One" is the season finale of the first season of the TV series Homeland. It originally aired on Showtime on December 18, 2011. The extended 85-minute episode sees the culmination of Abu Nazir's terrorist plot at the Vice President's summit, while Carrie Mathison's downward spiral continues.

The season finale was highly acclaimed by critics and with 1.71 million viewers was the highest rated finale ever for a Showtime first-year series.

Plot

Day one

Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) records a videotape of himself, explaining his future actions as an attack against a domestic threat — namely Vice President Walden (Jamey Sheridan) and his advisors, whom Brody blames for the deaths of 82 children during a drone strike in Pakistan. He leaves the camera's memory card at a drop-off point. Meanwhile, a depressed Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is visited by Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin). Carrie implores Saul to follow up on her investigation into Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban). She also wonders aloud why Brody betrayed her by turning her in, leading Saul to realize that Carrie is in love with Brody.

Marine One (fireboat)

M/V Marine One is a fireboat operated by the Seattle Fire Department (SFD). Marine One was laid down in 2006 and commissioned the same year. It is one of three fireboats operated by the SFD, the others being M/V Leschi and M/V Chief Seattle. All of these vessels respond to salt and fresh water situations.

The 50-foot (15 m) vessel, classified by the SFD as a "fast attack boat", has a flank speed of about 30 knots. It is a FireStorm 50 model fireboat constructed by MetalCraft Marine of Kingston, Ontario. The craft has an integrated 200-US-gallon (760 l; 170 imp gal) foam tank for use against chemically-fueled fires. It can pump water for land-based firefighting, handle rescue and salvage operations in contaminated environments, accommodate emergency medical services and pinpoint people in the water and other hot spots through a thermal imaging camera.
