Marina High School (San Leandro, California)

Marina High School was a public high school located in Washington Manor in San Leandro, California that operated from 1964 to 1982. It was part of the San Lorenzo Unified School District.

It first opened in Sept. 1964 on Wicks Blvd., in San Leandro, with only Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes. Donald Hayes was the architect of Marina High, which gave Marina its unique roofline. The students mostly came from the former Foothill High School in Hayward, CA. The first graduating class at Marina was in 1966 and the last graduating class was in 1982. Marina mainly served the Washington Manor area of San Leandro, and approximately 1200 students attended each year of its existence. Forrest S. Lindsay was the first Principal of Marina High School from 1964 through 1973. Roosevelt Bergmann was the Principal from 1974 through 1982.

Marina’s athletic teams were known as The Titans, and their school colors were royal blue and white. The Titans competed in the HAAL league in the following sports: Baseball, Basketball (The Marina Titans had their first winning season in 1969-70); Football; Golf; Badminton Team, Gymnastics Team, Soccor, Swim Team; Tennis; Track; Wrestling; G.A.A. Baseball; and G.A.A. Basketball. Many clubs existed at Marina High School such as Block "M" (boys sports), G.A.A. (girls sports), Megaphone club - spirt club for the school, French Club, C.S.F. (California Scholarship Federation), Latin Club, Future Business Leaders of America, the Virons, Rally Committee, Chess Club, Music Club, JV and Varsity Cheerleaders and Songgirls, and Executive Council, Student Court Justices, Representative Assembly, Student Curriculum Council, Homemaking, Art Club, and the Thunderbolt Staff (newspaper ), Timaran Staff (yearbook).

Marina High School (Huntington Beach, California)

Marina High School is a public high school located in the northwest corner of Huntington Beach, California which first began operating in 1963. Marina is part of the Huntington Beach Union High School District, which includes several other area high schools. The school is located on Springdale Street between Edinger Avenue and McFadden Avenue. In 2009, the school was named a California Distinguished School, the highest honor given to schools in California.

Athletics

Marina's athletic teams are known as the Vikings and their school colors are Navy Blue, Columbia Blue, and Gold. They compete in the Sunset League of the California Interscholastic Federation's (CIF) Southern Section. Marina has no on-campus stadium and plays most of its football home games at nearby Westminster High School.

In 2000, Marina's varsity field hockey team played an undefeated season of 13-0 and took both the Sunset League Championship as well as the CIF Championship.

In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.

In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. High school immediately follows primary (elementary) school; therefore, a Year-7 Australian high-school student is sometimes as young as 12. In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".

Secondary education in the United States

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school.

History

The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability.

In 1892, in response to many competing academic philosophies being promoted at the time, a working group of educators, known as the "Committee of Ten" was established by the National Education Association. It recommended twelve years of instruction, consisting of eight years of elementary education followed by four years of high school. Rejecting suggestions that high schools should divide students into college-bound and working-trades groups from the start, and in some cases also by race or ethnic background, they unanimously recommended that "every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil so long as he pursues it, no matter what the probable destination of the pupil may be, or at what point his education is to cease."
