Marika Sherwood

Marika Sherwood is a Hungarian-born historian, researcher, educator and author, based in England since 1965.

Biography

Sherwood was born in Hungary. With the remains of her Jewish family she emigrated to Australia in 1948. A short stint of employment in New Guinea introduced her to racism and colonialism. She returned to Sydney, attended university as a part-time student and then emigrated to the "Mother Country" with her son in 1965. Teaching in London schools introduced her to the many aspects of racism prevalent in the UK. She determined that if it ever became possible, she would do some research on the history of "Black" peoples in the UK as she wanted to replace fighting with fists to fighting with knowledge. Five years of work in Harlem, New York (1980-85), convinced her that this was necessary.

Sherwood has a desk, but is not on the staff of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London. In 1991 with Hakim Adi and other colleagues she founded what is now known as the Black and Asian Studies Association, in order to encourage research and disseminate information, and to campaign on education issues. This is ongoing.

Bonga (musician)

Bonga Kwenda (born José Adelino Barceló de Carvalho, 1943), better known as Bonga, is a folk and semba singer and songwriter from Angola.

Biography

Bonga was born in the province of Bengo, and left Angola when he was 23 years old to become an athlete, becoming the Portuguese record holder for the 400 metres (Angola was at the time one of Portugal's five African colonies). He had already begun his singing career at the age of 15.

Bonga abandoned athletics in 1972, concentrating solely on his music, and immediately became famous in his native Angola, as well as in Portugal. After the Carnation Revolution in April 1974, he would become a hit both with immigrants from the ex-Portuguese colonies, and Portuguese of both African and European descent. He has released over 30 albums, singing in Portuguese and traditional Angolan languages. His tracks are a mixture of Portuguese folk sounds, semba, kizomba and latin elements.

While Angola was still a Portuguese colony, Bonga was an outspoken supporter of independence. This led him to be exiled from Angola in the early 1970s.

Marika Siewert

Marika (also spelled MARIKA) is a Canadian recording artist, singer, songwriter, actor, and TV show host. MARIKA has had two top 40 radio singles in Canada, as well as songs placed with Elise Estrada, Elin Universal Music Group Germany, and Korea's Lee Hyori with "My Life" M-NET and Kim Bo Kyung. She also has songs placed on several seasons of America's Next Top Model, MTV and her single "ANGEL" was featured on the Lifetime network's original movie Sins of the Mother. MARIKA performed back in Medicine Hat for the 2010 Winter Olympics Torch relay where she shared the stage with County Superstar Terri Clark. The pair were chosen to perform because of their Medicine Hat roots. MARIKA was also recognized as Virgin 95.3 CKZZ-FM Best of BC artist as a result of her single release in 2011 - "Soldier". MARIKA released in 2004 an album called Untitled Chances, followed by radio singles in 2006 and 2007 "Christmas Came Early", "You Know I Will", and "Radio". "You Know I Will" got MARIKA nominated as best new artist in the Urban Category at the Canadian Radio Music Awards in 2007. Her album Unstoppable released in 2013 won the GMA Covenant awards Pop album of the Year, and she also recently was a featured singer on the new Hallmark TV channel's origianal series Signed, Sealed, Delivered which was executive produced by Martha Williamson who wrote and produced Touched By An Angel. She also shared the stage with Grammy and Dove award winners Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Juno award winner Brian Doerksen on their one time only United Tour. In December 2013, she wrote "This Christmas Time" produced by 604 Records producer Colin Janz, which was released to radio across Canada and parts of the U.S.A and garnered national airplay. Marika was born in San Fernando, Trinidad, raised in England and Medicine Hat, Alberta. She currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sherwood, Edmonton

Sherwood is a small neighbourhood in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Originally part of the Town of Jasper Place, it became a part of Edmonton when Jasper Place amalgamated with Edmonton in 1964.

The neighbourhood is bounded on the west by 156 Street, on the east by 149 Street, on the north by 95 Avenue, and on the south by 92 Avenue.

In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Sherwood had a population of 7003125400000000000♠1,254 living in 7002633000000000000♠633 dwellings, a -2.1% change from its 2009 population of 7003128100000000000♠1,281. With a land area of 0.44 km² (0.17 sq mi), it had a population density of 7003285000000000000♠2,850 people/km² in 2012.

Residential development

Almost half of the dwellings in Sherwood were built between the end of World War II and 1960. Just over six out of every ten residences (63%) are single-family dwellings. Another 34% are apartments in low-rise buildings with fewer than five stories. Most of the remaining dwellings are duplexes. Just over half of the residences (56%) are owner-occupied, with the remainder being rented.

Sherwood, Oregon

Sherwood is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. Located in the southeast corner of the county, it is a residential community in the Tualatin Valley southwest of Portland. As of the 2010 census, Sherwood had a population of 18,194 residents. The city's population for 2014 was estimated to be 18,978 by the U.S. Census. Sherwood was first incorporated in 1893 as a town. Originally named Smockville after its founder, James Christopher Smock, the town was given its current name by local businessman Robert Alexander in 1891, who likely named it after his hometown of Sherwood, Michigan.

History

What is now the Sherwood area was originally inhabited by the Atfalati band of the Kalapuya nation. The first significant wave of United States emigrants arrived in 1842. Native Americans were relocated to reservations after the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850–55 gave American citizens exclusive ownership of these lands. The relocation process took place under the guidance of a series of federal employees, most notably Superintendent of Indian Affairs Joel Palmer, who was severely criticized for his humane treatment of the tribes.
