Marietta Walker

Marietta Walker (1834-1930) is an American credited as the "mother" of Graceland University.

Early life and education

Marietta Hodges (later Walker) was born to Curtis and Lucy Clark Hodges on April 10, 1834 in Willoughby, Ohio. Curtis was from New York and Lucy from Vermont; their involvement in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) led them to move to Ohio. The Hodges joined other church members as they moved from Ohio to far west Missouri, where they purchased a 320-acre farm. War later broke out between the LDS group and other Missouri settlers, and when Marietta was just four years old, her father was shot in this conflict.

On October 27, 1838, Missouri Governor Lisburn Boggs ordered all members of the LDS church to leave the state. Walker and her family were among the thousands who fled and chose to settle in Nauvoo, Illinois. Walker was nearly ten when LDS prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were murdered; in a later article entitled "A Picture From Memory's Wall", Walker would recall seeing their bodies.

Walker (crater)

Walker is a lunar crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the northwest of the huge walled plain Apollo. Walker lies equidistant between the craters Plummer to the east and Rumford to the west-southwest.

This crater is roughly circular, with an outer rim that has been slightly worn due to minor impacts. The northwestern rim in particular has merged with a smaller crater, and another impact lies on the interior floor along the west-northwestern inner wall.

By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Walker.

Walker (Star Wars)

Walkers are fictional vehicles from the Star Wars universe that traverse the landscape on mechanical legs. They are used by the Old Republic and the Galactic Empire for ground assault or transport. Throughout the saga, walkers have played a pivotal role in the fate of characters and the outcome of battles. Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) is responsible for their animation and design, often using models, stop-motion animation, and relevant matte paintings to depict their presence in the films.

There are a variety of walkers: The Empire Strikes Back introduces the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) and All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST). In the Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith introduced earlier models of walkers, such as the AT-TE. The Star Wars expanded universe features numerous others. Walker variants have been merchandised and featured in popular culture.

Marietta, Georgia

Marietta is located in central Cobb County, Georgia, United States, and is the county's seat and largest city.

As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 56,579. The 2013 estimate is 59,089, making it one of the Atlanta metropolitan area's largest suburbs. Marietta is the fourth largest of the principal cities (by population) of the Atlanta metropolitan statistical area.

History

Etymology

The origin of the name is uncertain. It is believed that the city was named for Mary Cobb, the wife of U.S. Senator and Superior Court judge Thomas Willis Cobb. Judge Cobb is the namesake of the county.

Early settlers

Homes were built by early settlers near the Cherokee town of Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) prior to 1824. The first plat was laid out in 1833. Like most towns, Marietta had a square in the center with a courthouse. The Georgia General Assembly legally recognized the community on December 19, 1834.

Built in 1838, Oakton House is the oldest continuously occupied residence in Marietta. The original barn, milk house, smokehouse, and wellhouse remain on the property. The spectacular gardens contain the boxwood parterre from the 1870s. Oakton served as Major General Loring's headquarters during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864.

History

Marietta began in 2011. They released a split with Modern Baseball in 2012 titled Couples Therapy.

In 2013, Marietta released their first full-length album titled Summer Death.

In April 2015, Marietta released an EP titled Cuts. On August 17, 2015, Marietta released their second full-length album titled As It Were.

In December of 2015, Marietta announced on their Facebook page that they were breaking up.
