Mariachi

Mariachi (/mɑːriˈɑːi/; Spanish: [maˈɾjatʃi]) is a musical expression that dates back to at least 19th century Western Mexico. It is a tradition that can be defined by eight socio-musical elements: mariachi instrumentation and texture, musical genres and sub genres, performance methods and styles, singing styles and forms, dance styles, performative space, performance clothing, and the word "mariachi". Each element has its own history, originated at varying moments in time and in different regions of the Western Mexican countryside, and some, not all, had to have converged in order for the mariachi tradition to be what it has become.

From the 19th to 20th century, migrations from rural areas into cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City, along with the Mexican government's cultural promotion gradually re-labeled it as Son style, with its alternative name of “mariachi” becoming used for the “urban” form. Modifications of the music include influences from other music such as polkas and waltzes, the addition of trumpets and the use of charro outfits by mariachi musicians. The musical style began to take on national prominence in the first half of the 20th century, with its promotion at presidential inaugurations and on the radio in the 1920s.

MARIACHI

MARIACHI, the Mixed Apparatus for Radar Investigation of Cosmic-rays of High Ionization, is an apparatus for the detection of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) via bi-static radar interferometry using VHF transmitters. MARIACHI is also the name of the research project created and directed by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on Long Island, New York, initially intended to verify the concept that VHF signals can be reflected off the ionization patch produced by a cosmic ray shower. Project emphasis subsequently shifted to the attempted detection of radio wave reflections from a high energy ionization beam apparatus located at BNL's NASA Space Radiation Laboratory.

Its inventors hope the MARIACHI apparatus will detect UHECR over much larger areas than previously possible, and that it will also detect ultra high energy neutrino flux. The ground array detectors are scintillator arrays that are built and operated by high school students and teachers.

    Mariachi

    by: Ani Difranco

    I'll be the right hand
    You'll be the left hand
    You and me we make
    A mariachi band
    Standing on the corner
    Waiting for the lights
    When you're around I
    Always feel alright
    From the painted desert
    Over to paris, france
    I followed your pointed
    Finger with my glance
    And i've seen so much
    More than I would see
If it was just me, just me
If it was just me, just me
    First rehearsal
    Was under a redwoodtree
And you brought lyrics and you
    Handed them to me
And you said here you are
The only one who can sing this
And I felt kissed and I wondered
If it was just me, just me
What if it was just me, just me
    Let's get this party started
    Let's squeeze the lime
    The mariachi life
    Is really more than fine
    You know i'll meet you
You know i'll be flyin' blind
    At the appointed corner
    At the appointed time
    At the appointed corner
    At the appointed time
What if it was just me, just me?
What if it was just me, just me?
