Marble

Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Geologists use the term "marble" to refer to metamorphosed limestone; however, stonemasons use the term more broadly to encompass unmetamorphosed limestone. Marble is commonly used for sculpture and as a building material.

Etymology

The word "marble" derives from the Greek μάρμαρον (mármaron), from μάρμαρος (mármaros), "crystalline rock, shining stone", perhaps from the verb μαρμαίρω (marmaírō), "to flash, sparkle, gleam";R. S. P. Beekes has suggested that a "Pre-Greek origin is probable."

This stem is also the basis for the English word marmoreal, meaning "marble-like." While the English term resembles the French marbre, most other European languages follow the original Greek—see Persian and Irish marmar, Spanish mármol, Italian marmo, Portuguese mármore, Welsh, Slovene, German, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish marmor, Romanian marmură, Polish marmur, Dutch marmer, Turkish mermer, Czech mramor, and Russian мрáмор (mramor). In Hungarian it is called márvány.

Marble, Minnesota

Marble is a city in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States. It is part of the chain of small mining towns known as the Iron Range. The population was 701 at the 2010 census.

U.S. Highway 169 serves as a main route in the community.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.45 square miles (11.53 km²), of which 4.35 square miles (11.27 km²) is land and 0.10 square miles (0.26 km²) is water.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 701 people, 281 households, and 174 families residing in the city. The population density was 161.1 inhabitants per square mile (62.2/km²). There were 315 housing units at an average density of 72.4 per square mile (28.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.4% White, 0.6% African American, 3.1% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.3% of the population.

There were 281 households of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.1% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.

Marble cheese

Marble cheese is a name given to cheeses produced by combining two others, creating a marbled pattern, such as Sage Derby and Colby-Jack.

Description

Marble cheese originates from England. They are usually hard, processed cow's milk cheeses, produced from a combination of the curds of white and orange cheddars (for Marbled Cheddar), or similar. Colby-Jack combines Colby cheese and Monterey Jack and is most popular in the United States. They don't usually involve any artificial additives to achieve the marbling, though cheeses such as Red Windsor and Sage Derby contain colourings such as Chlorophyll (E140) and Carmine (E120).

Types

Landing

Landing is the last part of a flight, where a flying animal, aircraft, or spacecraft returns to the ground. When the flying object returns to water, the process is called alighting, although it is commonly called "landing," "touchdown" or "splashdown" as well. A normal aircraft flight would include several parts of flight including taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, descent and landing.

Aircraft

Aircraft usually land at an airport on a firm runway or helicopter landing pad, generally constructed of asphalt concrete, concrete, gravel or grass. Aircraft equipped with pontoons (floatplane) or with a boat hull-shaped fuselage (a flying boat) are able to land on water. Aircraft also sometimes use skis to land on snow or ice.

To land, the airspeed and the rate of descent are reduced such that the object descends at a low enough rate to allow for a gentle touch down. Landing is accomplished by slowing down and descending to the runway. This speed reduction is accomplished by reducing thrust and/or inducing a greater amount of drag using flaps, landing gear or speed brakes. When a fixed-wing aircraft approaches the ground, the pilot will move the control column back to execute a flare or round-out. This increases the angle of attack. Progressive movement of the control column back will allow the aircraft to settle onto the runway at minimum speed, landing on its main wheels first in the case of a tricycle gear aircraft or on all three wheels simultaneously in the case of a conventional landing gear-equipped aircraft, commonly referred to as a "taildragger". This is known as flaring.

Landing (water transport)

A landing is a water terminal for river transport lines, such as for ferries, steamboats or cargo ships.

A notable example is the historic Public Landing on the north bank of the Ohio River in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. In the age of steamboat transport, the public landing was frequently jammed with riverboat traffic with 5,000 arrivals and departures per season.
