Manmohan

Manmohan means 'Winner of the heart'. It is another name of Krishna, the Hindu deity, one of the "avatars" (or "incarnation") of Lord Vishnu. Manmohan may also refer to:

Manmohan (actor)

Manmohan (Hindi: मनमोहन) was an Indian actor of Bollywood, well known for his role as a villain. He also worked in Bengali, Gujarati and Punjabi films.

Early life

He was born and brought up in Jamshedpur. Manmohan came from a well to do family, who had their own business. Totally different from his other three brothers, he was very keen on becoming an actor from childhood. His son Nitin Manmohan is a famous producer, who produced popular films like Bol Radha Bol (1992), Laadla (1994), Deewangee (2001) and Bhoot (2003) etc.

Film career

He came to Bombay in 1950 and got acquainted with then famous personalities like Shankar-Jaikishen, Bhappi Sonie and G.P. Sippy. His close association with Jaikishen got him known to Keval Kayshap who cast him in his first film Shaheed. He was also in all of Bhappie Soni’s films. Through Bhappie Soni, he met Shakti Samanta, Pramod Chakravarty and Manoj Kumar. Then he got N.N. Sippy’s film Gumnaam. He was at the top of his acting career in the ’70s.

Manmohan (film)

Manmohan is a 1936 Urdu/Hindi romantic tragedy film directed by Mehboob Khan. This was Khan’s third film for Sagar Movietone after Al Hilal (1935) and Deccan Queen (1936). The cinematographer was Faredoon Irani who, starting from Mehboob Khan’s Al Hilal (Judjement of Allah) (1935) went on to establish a long working relationship with him lasting till Khan’s last film Son of India (1962). The music was composed by Ashok Ghosh assisted by Anil Biswas. The story writer was Zia Sarhadi who also wrote the lyrics, screenplay and dialogue in addition to acting in the film. Though he had started his writing career on Khan's backing for Deccan Queen (1936), it was with Manmohan that he achieved success. The film was inspired by Devdas (1935), which was a big hit at the box office. Surendra was chosen as the singing star to rival K. L. Saigal from New Theatres Calcutta, whose songs from Devdas had mesmerised the nation. Though Manmohan was referred to as the "poor man's Devdas" it went on to do well and the songs became very popular. The film starred Bibbo, Surendra, Yakub, Kayam Ali, Bhudo Advani and Mehdi Raza.
