Bishnupriya Manipuri language

The Bishnupuriya or Mayang (বিষ্ণুপ্রিয়া মণিপুরী) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in parts of the Indian states of Assam, Tripura and others, as well as in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, Burma, and other countries. It is written in the Bishnupuriya Script, it almost similar with Bengali and assamese scripts. Modern Bengali is away from ৱ ('wo-bo') that we use like that of modern Assamese and use র ('ro') as is also available in Bengali which is akin to Assamese. Pronunciation is very close to that of the Bengali alphabet.

History and development

BISHNUPURIYA OR Bishnupriya Manipuri is spoken in parts of Assam and Tripura in India, in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, Burma, and in several other countries. It is different from many Indo-Aryan languages like Bengali, Assamese, Odia, etc. The language originated in Bengal and spreaded all over in North East and was confined to the surroundings of the Loktak Lake. Other authorities such as An account of the valley of Munnipore by Col. McCullock,Descriptive Ethnology of Bengal by E. T. Dalton and the Linguistic Survey of India by George Abraham Grierson mention that the language was in existence in Manipur before the 19th century. Dr. Grierson refers to the language as "Bishnupuriya", while some other writers call it simply "Bishnupriya" or "Bishnupriya Manipuri"

Meithei language

Manipuri or Meiteilon (Meitei) /ˈmeɪteɪ/ or Manipuri /mænᵻˈpʊəri/ is the predominant language and lingua franca in the southeastern Himalayan state of Manipur, in northeastern India. It is the official language in government offices. Manipuri or Meiteilon is also spoken in the Indian states of Assam and Tripura, and in Bangladesh and Burma (now Myanmar). It is currently classified as a vulnerable language by UNESCO.

Manipuri or Meiteilon is a Sino-Tibetan language whose exact classification remains unclear. It has lexical resemblances to Kuki and Tangkhul Naga.

Manipuri or Meiteilon has proven to be an integrating factor among all ethnic groups in Manipur who use it to communicate among themselves. It has been recognized (as Manipuri) by the Indian Union and has been included in the list of scheduled languages (included in the 8th schedule by the 71st amendment of the constitution in 1992). Manipuri or Meiteilon is taught as a subject up to the post-graduate level (Ph.D.) in universities of India, apart from being a medium of instruction up to the undergraduate level in Manipur. Education in government schools is provided in Manipuri or Meiteilon through the eighth standard.
