Mangup (Ukrainian: Мангуп, Russian: Мангуп, Crimean Tatar: Mangup) also known as Mangup Kale (kale means fortress) is a historic fortress in Crimea, located on a plateau about 9 miles due east of Sevastopol (ancient Chersones).
In early medieval times it was known as Doros (Δόρος) or Dory (Δόρυ) by the Byzantines, later it was given the Kipchak name Mangup.
According to the 6th-century Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea, the region of Dory or Doros was settled by those Ostrogoths who refused to follow Theodoric the Great in his invasion of Italy in the 490s, marking the beginning of the Crimean Goths and their homeland, Gothia. Archaeological excavations have demonstrated the establishment of Christian basilicas, fortifications and cave settlements (alongside Mangup also at Eski Kermen etc.) during the 6th century. By the late 7th or early 8th century, a new bishopric, the Metropolis of Doros, was established in the region. Crimean Gothia was conquered by the Khazars in the early 8th century, and later in the 8th century was the center of an unsuccessful Gothic revolt against Khazaria led by Bishop John of Gothia.
"Mangup" (English translation: "Rascal") was the Yugoslav entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 1988, composed by Rajko Dujmić and Stevo Cvikić and sung by Srebrna Krila in Croatian.
On the night of the contest the song was performed 21st (last), following Portugal's Dora with "Voltarei". At the close of the voting it had received 87 points, placing 6th.
It was succeeded as Yugoslav representative at the 1989 contest by Riva with "Rock Me".
I got an ape performing in my head
If he don't stop then i will soon be dead
This monkey's no friend of mine
I try to act straight but he's on cloud number nine
He's got a cup made of tin
And it's 'cause of him you won't let me in
He bangs a drum so i can get no sleep
Well he's a monkey but he can't be beat
Head over heels on banana peel
I'm getting confused as to what i feel
And every time i try to speak
He always puts his monkeytongue in my cheek
Oh my my - i'd do anything to make him die
But then i see there's nothing i can do
The monkey's just a part of me
I got a monkey singing in my brain
I should have known already we're the same
I got some monkey business to attend
I think i'll ask him if he'd hold my hand
And ask him to be a friend of mine
Together we'll fly up to cloud number nine
And share his cup made of tin
Maybe then you'd like to let us in
Oh my my - i did everything to make him die
But now i see there's nothing ican do
