Mandan

The Mandan are a Native American tribe residing in North Dakota. They are enrolled in the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation. About half of the Mandan still reside in the area of the reservation; the rest reside around the United States and in Canada.

The Mandan historically lived along the banks of the Missouri River and two of its tributaries—the Heart and Knife Rivers—in present-day North and South Dakota. Speakers of Mandan, a Siouan language, developed a settled, agrarian culture. They established permanent villages featuring large, round, earth lodges, some 40 feet (12 m) in diameter, surrounding a central plaza. While the bison was key to the daily life of the Mandan, they also farmed and actively traded goods with other Great Plains tribes.

Population

The Mandan population was 3,600 in the early 18th century. In 1836, there were over 1,600 fullblood Mandans, but this number was estimated to have dropped to 125 by 1838. In the 1990s, 6,000 people were enrolled in the Three Affiliated Tribes. In the 2010 Census, 1,171 people reported Mandan ancestry. 365 of them were full-bloods, and 806 had partial ancestry.

Mandan, North Dakota

Mandan is a city in Morton County and the eighth largest city in North Dakota. Founded in 1879, it became the county seat of Morton County in 1881. The U.S. Census Bureau measured the population at 18,331 in the 2010 census and estimated the 2014 population at 20,820. Located across the Missouri River from the state capital of Bismarck, Mandan is a core city of the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named after the Mandan Indians. In 2013, Mandan was selected a finalist in Rand McNally Most Patriotic City competition.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.13 square miles (28.83 km²), of which, 11.03 square miles (28.57 km²) is land and 0.10 square miles (0.26 km²) is water.

Climate

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Mandan has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.

Mandan (YTB-794)

Mandan (YTB-794) was a United States Navy Natick-class large harbor tug named for Mandan, North Dakota.

Construction

The contract for Mandan was awarded 15 June 1967. She was laid down on 11 December 1967 at Marinette, Wisconsin, by Marinette Marine and launched 30 April 1968.

Operational history

Mandan served at Naval Station Subic Bay, Philippines until the Vietnam war when she was reassigned to Naval Support Activity Danang, South Vietnam. She earned campaign stars for Vietnamese Counteroffensive - Phase V, Vietnamese Counteroffensive - Phase VI, and Tet/69 Counteroffensive. After that conflict's conclusion, Mandan returned to Subic Bay where she served out the rest of her career.

Stricken from the Navy List 5 January 2001, ex-Mandan was sunk during fleet training exercises, 27 April 2003.
