Man of the match

In sport, a Man of the Match or Player of the Game or Man of the Series award is given to the outstanding player, almost always the one who makes the most impact, in a particular match or series. The term was originally used more often in cricket before being adopted by other sports. This can be a player from either team, usually the winning team.

Some sports have unique traditions regarding these sorts of awards, and they are especially sought after in championship or all-star matches. In some sports organisations and leagues, particularly in the United States, the term "Most Valuable Player" (MVP) is used for some of these awards, while in Australia, "Best and Fairest" is used. In ice hockey, three players of the game instead of only one, called the "three stars", are recognised.

Association football

In association football, the award typically goes to a player on the winning side. Players who score a hat-trick, or goalkeepers who keep a clean sheet under resounding pressure often get the award. Hat-trick scorers usually receive the match ball whether or not they are officially named man of the match. However, not all tournaments/leagues have an official man of the match award, so sometimes accolades are given by websites/newspapers instead.

The Match!

The Match! is an atheist/anarchist journal published in Tucson, Arizona, United States since 1969. The Match! is edited, published, and printed by Fred Woodworth. The philosophy of the journal is ethical anarchism, which is elucidated on the back of the journal.

The Match! is published irregularly; new issues usually appear once or twice per year. Over 100 issues have been published to date.

Ideology

The Match! espouses a generally individualist anarchist form of anarchism. In addition the magazine also espouses atheism, opposition to surveillance technologies which may be seen as posing a threat to privacy, and opposition to computers. For this reason, Woodworth prints and publishes The Match! entirely without the use of digital technology, and neither has nor desires a web site.

Critical stances

The Match! is critical of some anarchists such as Noam Chomsky's support for social democracy, for what the editor sees as compromises with statism. In particular, the magazine is critical of religion or supernatural beliefs of any kind. The publication also criticizes writers such as Bob Black, Tad Kepley,Feral Faun and organizations such as CrimethInc., Killing King Abacus, and Venomous Butterfly Publications. Woodworth criticises as unethical their support and justification of theft (shoplifting and plagiarism) and revolutionary violence under the rationales of illegalism and insurrectionism.

Plot summary

In the Scottish village of Inverdoune, teams representing the village's two pubs—Benny's Bar and Le Bistro—have played an annual football game for 99 consecutive years. Under the terms of the original bet, the loser of the 100th match must forfeit their bar to the winner. Facing its 100th consecutive loss, Benny's Bar looks set to be bulldozed and replaced with a car park by the odious owner of Le Bistro, "Gorgeous" George Gus (Richard E. Grant). Local boy Wullie Smith (Max Beesley) returns from university, where he stays at the home of Sheila Bailey, re-igniting his dormant feelings for her daughter Rosemary (Laura Fraser). Wullie possesses TFR (Total Football Recall)—an encyclopedic recollection of football tactics and statistics—and would be an ideal manager for the Benny's Bar team, but he is traumatised by the death of his brother during their childhood and refuses. Also unwilling to help the team is a resident former professional football player (Neil Morrissey), known as "Piss-Off" due to his response whenever he is asked to play.
