Mother's boy

Mother's boy, also mummy's boy or mama's boy, is a term for a man who is excessively attached to his mother at an age when men are expected to be independent (e.g. live on their own, be economically independent, married to a woman or about to be married). Anecdotally, this age of independence varies throughout each strata of every human society in the world, sometimes greatly. A mother's boy may be effete or effeminate, or might be perceived as being macho, or might have a personality disorder, such as avoidant personality disorder, or might be schizophrenic, so that the mother acts as a caretaker. In any case, a mother's boy cannot maintain a healthy partnership with a woman (Martyn Carruthers, 1998).

In classical Freudian psychoanalytic theory, the term Oedipus complex denotes a child's desire to have sexual relations with the parent of the opposite sex. Sigmund Freud believed that a child's identification with the same-sex parent is the successful resolution of the Oedipus complex. If this identification fails, the boy remains a lifelong mama's boy.

Mama's Boy is a 2007 comedy starring Diane Keaton and Jon Heder, and features music by Mark Mothersbaugh. The film was distributed by Warner Bros. for a limited release to certain parts of the United States. Mama's Boy was directed by Tim Hamilton.

Plot summary

Eccentric Jeffrey Mannus (Jon Heder) is 29 years old and lives with his mother, Jan (Diane Keaton). He sees no reason to alter this arrangement, but his perfect world is upended when Jan meets Mert Rosenbloom (Jeff Daniels), a motivational speaker. Mert successfully woos Jan and moves in on Jeffrey's territory, something Jeffrey will not tolerate. While at a coffee shop, Jeffrey finds a friend in one of the workers and later enlists her aid as his unlikely ally, an aspiring singer-songwriter, Nora Flannagan (Anna Faris), with an anti-establishment penchant and a soft spot for him. As the war between Mert and Jeffrey escalates, something unprecedented happens — slowly, to both his own surprise and horror, Jeffrey discovers his inner adult. However, before this happens, Jeffrey and Mert get into a fist fight in Jan's home, causing her to break up with Mert. Jeffrey is pleased, but Jan kicks him out of the house. He goes to find Nora, who is currently upset with him for being such a "jerk", and Nora does not offer any help. Jeffrey lives on the streets, but is eventually arrested for urinating in a sink. Seymore comes to the rescue and pays his bail, also allowing him to move in with him. Jeffrey realizes his errors and fights to get Jan and Mert back together. After achieving this, he goes to stop the bus that Nora is travelling on, as she is leaving for college, in his new car. He parks it in the middle of the road and stands on the hood, holding up a radio that is playing one of Nora's favorite songs. The bus driver makes Nora talk to him and they make up. They then drive off into the distance.

Mama's Boy (TV series)

Mama's Boy is an American sitcom that aired from September 19, 1987 until August 6, 1988. It was created by Susan Harris, and produced by Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions and Touchstone Television. The comedy starred Bruce Weitz and Nancy Walker in the lead roles.

Mama's Boy was proposed as a new NBC project to debut as a series sometime during the 1987-88 season. However, after a couple of preview telecasts in the fall of 1987, the network continued to air the series' initial episodes sporadically (with as many as five months passing between episodes three and four) without a regular time slot. By the end of the season, NBC decided not to upgrade the show from "specials" status; only seven episodes were produced, with six airing through August 6, 1988. The last episode remains unaired.

Premise

A newspaper columnist shares a New York apartment with his mother.

Weitz and Walker received this series in response to their recent popular NBC roles: his seven-year run as Det. Mick Belker on Hill Street Blues, and her two-time guest role as Angela, sister of Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) on fellow Witt/Thomas/Harris series The Golden Girls. Additionally, Dan Hedaya, whose high-profile NBC guest role was as Nick Tortelli on Cheers, was added to the cast of this proposed series soon after the cancellation of his short-lived Cheers spinoff, The Tortellis.
