Main river

Main rivers are a statutory type of watercourse in England and Wales, usually larger streams and rivers, but also include some smaller watercourses. A main river is defined as a watercourse marked as such on a main river map, and can include any structure or appliance for controlling or regulating the flow of water in, into or out of a main river. The Environment Agency's powers to carry out flood defence works apply to main rivers only. In England main rivers are designated by Defra. The Welsh Government performs this function in Wales. Every other open watercourse in England and Wales is determined by statute as an 'ordinary watercourse'.

Main (river)

The Main (German pronunciation: [ˈmaɪn]) is a river in Germany. With a length of 527 km (327 mi) (including the White Main: 574 km (357 mi)), it is the longest right tributary of the Rhine, and the longest river lying entirely in Germany (if we consider the Weser and the Werra as two separate rivers; together they are longer). The largest cities along the Main are Frankfurt am Main and Würzburg.

Geography

The Main River flows through the German states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg (forming the border with Bavaria for some distance) and Hesse. Its basin competes with the Danube for water; as a result, many of its boundaries are identical with those of the European Watershed.

The Main begins near Kulmbach in Franconia at the joining of its two headstreams, the Red Main (Roter Main) and the White Main (Weißer Main). The Red Main originates in the Franconian Jura mountain range, 50 km (31 mi) in length, and runs through Creussen and Bayreuth. The White Main originates in the mountains of the Fichtelgebirge; it is 41 km (25 mi) long. In its upper and middle section it runs through the valleys of the German Highlands. Its lower section crosses the Lower Main Lowlands (Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin and northern Upper Rhine Plain) to Wiesbaden, where it discharges into the Rhine. Major tributaries of the Main are the Regnitz, the Franconian Saale, the Tauber, and the Nidda.

Main River (Newfoundland and Labrador)

Main River is a river in Newfoundland, Canada, a very popular canoeing destination. It is 57 km long, originates in the Long Range Mountains and enters the sea at White Bay.

Main River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in February 2001.

The Mayn River (Russian: Майн), sometimes spelled Main River, is a river in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (Magadan Oblast) in Russia, one of the major tributaries of the Anadyr River. The length of the river is 475 kilometres (295 mi). The area of is drainage basin is 32,800 square kilometres (12,700 sq mi). It is a right tributary, flowing roughly northwards from its source in the small Mainskoe Lake, located in the northern part of the Parapol Valley, in the Koryak Mountain Range. This river passes then through sparsely populated areas of the forest-tundra subzones of Chukotka. The vegetation of the area includes mosses, lichens, dwarf shrubs, and sedge.

The Main River meets the Anadyr at Ust-Maynin the mid-lower stretch of its course, in an area of wetlands and small lakes, about 65 kilometres (40 mi) further upstream from the confluence of the Anadyr and the Belaya River. All these rivers are frozen for about eight to nine months in a year.

The whole basin of the Main River and its tributaries belong to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.
