Muhammad Ahmad

Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah (Arabic: محمد أحمد ابن عبد الله; August 12, 1844 – June 22, 1885) was a religious leader of the Samaniyya order in Sudan who, on June 29, 1881, proclaimed himself the Mahdi (or Madhi), the messianic redeemer of the Islamic faith. His proclamation came during a period of widespread resentment among the Sudanese population of the oppressive policies of the Turco-Egyptian rulers, and capitalized on the messianic beliefs popular among the various Sudanese religious sects of the time. More broadly, the Mahdiyya, as Muhammad Ahmad's movement was called, was influenced by earlier Mahdist movements in West Africa, as well as Wahhabism and other puritanical forms of Islamic revivalism that developed in reaction to the growing military and economic dominance of the European powers throughout the 19th century.

From his announcement of the Mahdiyya in June 1881 until the fall of Khartoum in January 1885, Muhammad Ahmad led a successful military campaign against the Turco-Egyptian government of the Sudan (known as the Turkiyah). During this period, many of the theological and political doctrines of the Mahdiyya were established and promulgated among the growing ranks of the Mahdi's supporters, the Ansars. After Muhammad Ahmad's unexpected death on 22 June 1885, a mere six months after the conquest of Khartoum, his chief deputy, Abdallahi ibn Muhammad took over the administration of the nascent Mahdist state.

Mohammed Ahmed (Polo)

Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed (Polo) (sometimes referred to as Mohammed "Polo" Ahmed) and popularly known as the "Dribbling Magician", is a former Ghanaian international football player and arguably the most technically gifted player ever to emerge from Ghana. He was in the Ghana squad that won the 1978 African Cup of Nations held in Ghana. He was a left winger and played for Hearts of Oak in the Ghana premier league.

Playing career

Polo played youth football with Auroras in Accra before signing for Hearts of Oak. Along with Mama Acquah, Anas Seidu, Peter Lamptey and Robert Hammond, they were known as the “Fearsome Five” and formed the backbone of the team. He was invited into the Black Stars at the age of 17 years. He also once played for Great Olympics football club, also in Accra. Mohammad Polo has also played in the 1980s for the famous Dubai Club, Al Wasl where the fans bonded with him and his skills instantly, and still remember the magic 20 years after his departure. Polo still visits Dubai and Al Wasl every now and then, and is seen wearing its yellow shirt in Ghana.

Mohammed Ahmed (athlete)

Mohammed Ahmed (born January 5, 1991) is a Canadian long-distance runner who represented Canada in the 10,000 meter races at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.

Running career

Youth career

Before college, Mohammed Ahmed was the Canadian Junior 5000m champion on four occasions, and twice finished in the top 10 at World Junior Championships (4th in 2010, 9th in 2008), to go along with 2 Canadian senior titles in the event. Ahmed's resume also includes a Pan American Junior title.

Collegiate

Ahmed attended the St. Catharines Collegiate and Ahmed attended University of Wisconsin-Madison until he graduated in the summer of 2014. During his time at college he amassed 11 NCAA All-American awards in track and cross country and an Olympic berth in the 10,000m at the 2012 London Olympic Games. At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Mohammed had a breakthrough performance recording the highest finish in Canadian History in the 10,000m event with his 9th-place finish, almost equaling his lifetime best in the process with a 27:35.76 clocking.
