Maheshtala (Bengali:মহেশতলা) is a city and a municipality under Maheshtala, Rabindra Nagar, and (some part of) Metiaburz police stations of Alipore Sadar Subdivision in South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
As of 2001 India census, Maheshtala had a population of 389,214. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Maheshtala has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 63%. In Maheshtala, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
A London-based company has joined hands with a Bengali NRI to develop a mini township known as the Mahestala project as a joint venture with the Maheshtala Municipality, for which 21.22 acres (85,900 m2) have been acquired near Nungi station. There will be 2,240 middle income group flats in 44 buildings. The company will improve the road infrastructure in the area.

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 155 Maheshtala (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is composed of the following: Ward Nos. 8 and 11 to 35 of Maheshtala municipality.
Maheshtala (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is part of No. 21 Diamond Harbour (Lok Sabha constituency).
In 2001 Kasturi Das of Trinamool Congress defeated Sk' Md. Ismail of CPI(M).

In the 2006, 2001 and 1996 state assembly elections, Mursalin Molla of CPI(M) won the Mahestala assembly seat defeating his nearest rivals Dulal Das of Congress in 2006, Biman Banerjee of Trinamool Congress in 2001 and Gouranga Mukherjee of Congress in 1996. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Abul Basar of CPI(M) defeated Malay Chowdhury of Congress in 1991 and Habibur Rahman of Congress in 1987. Mir Abdus Sayeed of CPI(M) defeated Dilip Ghose, Independent, in 1982. Sudhir Chandra Bhandari of CPI(M) defeated Mali Safiuddin of Janata Party in 1977.
