Mahatma Gandhi Road which is also used in its abbreviated form as M. G. Road, named after Mahatma Gandhi. M. G. Road is one of the most frequently used road names in India, Agra having two of them. Several other Indian cities have a road by this name. In 2010, attempts were made to rename Hillcroft Avenue in Houston, Texas to Mahatma Gandhi Avenue but the proponents were unable to secure signatures from 75% of the property owners. As a result, the group settled for renaming the areas around Hillcroft Avenue to Mahatma Gandhi district. In Kolkata, Central Road was renamed Harrison Road in 1892 after Sir Henry Leland Harrison, then the chairman of Calcutta Corporation. It has recently been renamed yet again to Mahatma Gandhi Road. In many cities in South India, Mahatma Gandhi Road is popularly known by other names. In Chennai, it is known as Nungambakkam High Road. In Coimbatore, Mahatma Gandhi Road is popularly known by Avarampalayam Road. In other countries, Mahatma Gandhi Road is known by different names (Gandhistraat, Gandhiweg, Gandhiplein).

Mahatma Gandhi Road also known as M.G. Road is a road in Bangalore, India. It runs east from Trinity Circle at one end to Anil Kumble circle at the other. Known as South Parade in pre-independence era, it was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi Road on 26 February 1948.

M. G. Road is also one of the busiest roads in the city and is lined on one side with retail stores, food outlets and restaurants. It has many office buildings, shops and theatres. It is also a home to a large number of buildings and banks. M.G. Road now has its very own Metro Railway Station

Presently, the M.G Road Boulevard is being reconstructed after construction of the MG Road Metro station was completed and services launched on October 20, 2011. The Bangalore Metro line that runs through MG Road, connects the eastern part of Bangalore with the west. The east part of Bangalore Metro is the Baiyappanahalli station.

MG Road or Mahatma Gandhi Road formerly known as James Street is one of the busiest roads of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and a foremost shopping district in Secunderabad. It is spread over 2 km.

It leads to a warren of streets called Tobacco Bazaar and Pot Market. Major landmarks include Paradise Hotel, Kabra Jewellers, Gandhi Statue, Chermas, Asrani Hotel, Paradise X roads, KFC, Ramgopalpet Police Station and Malani Building.

History

This road was earlier called James Street and after Indian independence, following convention, a major street in every city in India was named Mahatma Gandhi Road'. There is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the road.

Commercial area

MG Road is one of the foremost shopping areas in Secunderabad. The General Bazaar and Cloth Market off this road are familiar haunts for shoppers and bargain hunters.

Recently hotels have come up on this road including Tirupati's famous Hotel Bhima's.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ˈɡɑːndi, ˈɡæn-/;Hindustani: [ˈmoːɦənd̪aːs ˈkərəmtʃənd̪ ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi]; 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled", "venerable")—applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,—is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father", "papa") in India. In common parlance in India he is often called Gandhiji. He is unofficially called the Father of the Nation.

Born and raised in a Hindu merchant caste family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.

Mahatma Gandhi (footballer)

Mahatma Gandhi Heberpio Mattos Pires, commonly known as Mahatma (born 18 February 1992) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays for Atlético Clube Goianiense as a defender.

Club career

Named after Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi joined Atlético Clube Goianiense. In 2011, he was a substitute on bench for a match of Serie A. He made seven Serie A appearances in 2012. In 2013, he played four matches for Serie B, but did not get a chance to play in 2014. He was part of the 2014 Campeonato Goiano winning team, where he made five appearances in the state league.

Mahatma Gandhi (sculpture)

Mahatma Gandhi is an outdoor sculpture of the Indian independence movement leader of the same name, installed at Hermann Park's McGovern Centennial Gardens in Houston, Texas, in the United States. The statue was dedicated in Hermann Park on October 2, 2004.
