Magnolia
Magnolia is a large genus of about 210flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.
Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. To avoid damage from pollinating beetles, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are extremely tough.Fossilised specimens of M. acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae date to 95 million years ago. Another aspect of Magnolia considered to represent an ancestral state is that the flower bud is enclosed in a bract rather than in sepals; the perianth parts are undifferentiated and called tepals rather than distinct sepals and petals. Magnolia shares the tepal characteristic with several other flowering plants near the base of the flowering plant lineage such as Amborella and Nymphaea (as well as with many more recently derived plants such as Lilium).

Magnolia (oil platform)
Magnolia is an offshore oil drilling and production Extended Tension Leg Platform in the Gulf of Mexico. It is the world's deepest ETLP, reaching 1,432 m (4,698 ft), beating the Marco Polo TLP by 120 m (390 ft).
The hull consists of four circular columns connected at the bottom by rectangular pontoons. At the base of each column, a pontoon extends outward to support two tethers, which are connected to pile foundations on the seabed. The design capacity is an estimated daily production of 50,000 bbl (7,900 m3) of oil and 150,000,000 cu ft (4,200,000 m3) of natural gas.
The Magnolia field is located approximately 180 mi (290 km) south of Cameron, Louisiana, in Garden Banks blocks 783 and 784 in the Gulf of Mexico. It is located along the southern edge of the Titan Mini-Basin where multiple deep-water reservoir sands encounter a series of down-to-the-basin and antithetic faults adjacent to salt.

History
The city was founded in 1853. At the time of its incorporation in 1858, the city had a population of about 1,950. The city grew slowly as an agricultural and regional cotton market until the discovery of oil just east of the city in March 1938, with the Barnett #1 drilled by the Kerr-Lynn Company. The Magnolia Oil Field was an important discovery, not just for the city but for the nation, as it was the largest producing field (in volume) during the early years of World War II, helping to fuel the American war effort.
In March 2013 more than 5,000 barrels of oil leaked from a Lion Oil Trading & Transportation storage tank in Magnolia, with some flowing into a bayou.
Geography
Magnolia Plantation (Schriever, Louisiana)
Magnolia Plantation, built in 1858, is a private residence located on Louisiana Highway 311, west of New Orleans and three miles south of Schriever, Louisiana. The plantation was built to cultivate sugar cane, which was a critical part of Terrebonne Parish's antebellum economy. The plantation house is one of six surviving Greek Revival plantation houses in the parish. A portion of the film 12 Years a Slave was filmed at the plantation.
The plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. According to the List of plantations in Louisiana, Magnolia was given National Historic Landmark status on January 3, 1998.
