"Magic Carpet Ride" is a rock song written by John Kay and Rushton Moreve from the Canadian-American hard rock band Steppenwolf. The song was initially released in 1968 on the album The Second. It was the lead single from that album, peaking at No. 3 in the US, and becoming the band's second-biggest hit, surpassed only by "Born to Be Wild". The song is also considered the first modern rock video.
The single version differs noticeably from the album version with a different vocal take by Kay used for the first verse of the song and differing instrumental balances. The single version is also much shorter than the album version, with a running time of 2 minutes and 55 seconds (the album version is 4 minutes and 25 seconds long).
Lead singer John Kay wrote the song; the lyrics "I like to dream, right between my sound machine" came from his inspiration from listening to a hi-fi home stereo system he bought with royalties from his first album.
In 1988, the band rerecorded the song with the hip hop group (and DJ) Grandmaster Flash. The track appeared on his and the Furious Five reunion album On the Strength.

Magic Carpet Ride (A.K.A.: Organized Jobs; Turkish: Organize İşler) is a 2005 Turkish comedy film, written and directed by Yılmaz Erdoğan, about a small-time criminal who accidentally recruits a failed comedy Superman impersonator into his gang. The film, which went on nationwide release on December 23, 2005 , is the first Turkish production to be shot in 1:2, 35mm CinemaScope format.
The film was shot on location in Istanbul, Turkey.
Asim Noyan (Yılmaz Erdoğan) and his gang make up a rambling collective, which concerns itself with a range of criminal activities, running from car theft to fraud. An inveterate womaniser, Asim meets the failed comedian Superman impersonator Samet (Tolga Cevik) while fleeing from an angry husband. Desperate Samet finds himself unwittingly implicated in the life of the gang. Meanwhile Umut (Özgü Namal), the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ocak, a highly literate but hard-up couple, leads an altogether different life. The paths of Samet, Umut and Asim's gang cross because of a stolen car.
"Defender" is a song by Australian singer–songwriter Gabriella Cilmi, released as the third single from her second studio album Ten. The single release of "Defender" included a cover of Kiki Dee's "Magic Carpet Ride" as a b-side, promotional releases however listed the two songs as a double-A Side. It was co-written by Gabriella herself alongside George Astasio, Jason Pebworth and Jon Shave.
"Defender" was released as a digital download on 26 August 2010. The single failed to appear on the UK Singles Chart.
Jon O'Brien from Allmusic said that: "The epic beats of the Dido-esque power "Defender," offer a respite from the party atmosphere, but as competent as they are, Ten is much more interesting when Cilmi unleashes her previously hidden disco diva tendencies".
The music video for "Defender" starts off with Cilmi with her back to the camera holding a microphone, a stage light is shining on her and a crowd can be heard cheering and applauding her. The video then cuts to Gabriella sitting and singing in a room wearing a white top; the room seems to be a part of a derelict space station. Clips of her walking through the corridors with a black dress intersect the parts of the video with her in the room. Whilst walking through the corridor she takes off her jewellery and her dress leaving Cilmi in just her underwear and shoes. Water then sprays over her and close ups of Gabriella with wet hair are shown.
I like to dream
Yes, yes right between the sound machine
On a cloud of sight I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here
[Chorus]
Well you don't know what we could find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
Well you don't know what we could see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl, look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
So I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well someone came and took the lamp away
I looked around, a lousy candle was all I found
[Chorus]
