Mad Love (2001 film)

Mad Love (Spanish: Juana la Loca, literally Juana the Madwoman) is a 2001 period drama film written and directed by Vicente Aranda starring Pilar López de Ayala and Daniele Liotti. The plot follows the tragic fate of Queen Joanna of Castile madly in love to an unfaithful husband, Philip the Handsome, Archduke of Austria. The film received 3 Goya awards, in the categories of Best Actress, Best Wardrobe, and Best Makeup and Hair.

Plot

Tordesillas, 1554. Seventy four years old, Queen Joanna of Castile, called Juana La Loca (Joanna the Madwoman), is still mourning the loss of her husband who died a half century before. Joanna remembers with emotion the man she loved passionately, but who brought her ruin. She does not fear death, she says, because death would allow her to be reunited with her husband. Their story goes back almost 60 years.

In 1496, Joanna, the third child of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, is leaving Spain through the port of Laredo. She is headed to Flanders to marry the Archduke of Austria, Philip, nicknamed the Handsome, a man she has never laid eyes on. The marriage has been arranged for political purposes. Joanna's siblings and her mother, Queen Isabella, bid her farewell.

Mad Love (1935 film)

Mad Love (also released as The Hands of Orlac) is a 1935 American horror film, an adaptation of Maurice Renard's story The Hands of Orlac. It was directed by German-émigré film maker Karl Freund, and stars Peter Lorre as Dr. Gogol, Frances Drake as Yvonne Orlac and Colin Clive as Stephen Orlac. The plot revolves around Doctor Gogol's obsession with actress Yvonne Orlac. When Stephen Orlac's hands are destroyed in a train accident, Yvonne brings him to Gogol, who claims to be able to repair them. As Gogol becomes obsessed to the point that he will do anything to have Yvonne, Stephen finds that his new hands have made him into an expert knife thrower.

Mad Love was Freund's final directorial assignment and Lorre's American film debut. Critics praised Lorre's acting, but the film was unsuccessful at the box office. Film critic Pauline Kael found the film unsatisfactory, but argued that it had influenced Citizen Kane. Cinematographer Gregg Toland was involved in the production of both films. Mad Love's reputation has grown over the years, and it is viewed in a more positive light by modern film critics.

Pegz

Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz (or MC Pegasus), is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He is the CEO of Obese Records — the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B.

Biography

Tirren Staaf has said that he was named after Tiran Porter, former member of the Doobie Brothers.

Pegz has been a part of the Australian hip hop scene since 1992, and has released three full-length studio albums. As a teenager he was first a graffiti artist before becoming a rapper.

In 2000, he scored a job at Obese Records, a specialist hip-hop music store in Prahran.

He released his first, self-titled album on the Obese label in 2001, followed by Capricorn Cat in 2003 and Axis in 2005.

In 2005, Pegz toured nationally with Australian Hip Hop Milk Bar Stars (Pegz, Muph, DJ Bonez and Plutonic Lab).

Upon releasing his fourth solo album, Burn City, in 2007, Pegz nominally retired as a solo artist to concentrate on managing Obese Records.
