Macedonian

Macedonian may refer to someone or something from or related to Macedonia, in any of several meanings of that term. More specifically, it may refer to:

People

  • Macedonians (ethnic group), the South Slavic ethnic group primarily associated with the Republic of Macedonia
  • Macedonians (Greeks), the Greek people from the region of Macedonia in Greece
  • Ancient Macedonians, the people associated with the ancient region and kingdom of Macedonia
  • Macedonians (Bulgarians), the Bulgarian people from the region of Macedonia in Bulgaria
  • Macedo-Romanians, an older term for Aromanians, a small eastern Romance ethno-linguistic group from the region of Macedonia
  • Languages

  • Macedonian language, a modern South Slavic language spoken by ethnic Macedonians
  • Ancient Macedonian language, an extinct language, probably related to the ancient Greek language
  • Macedonian dialect, one of the varieties of Modern Greek, spoken in the region of Macedonia in Greece
  • Other uses

  • Macedonian Dynasty, a line of rulers of the Byzantine Empire (867–1056)
  • Macedonian wine

The Republic of Macedonia produces wine on some 22,400 hectares (55,000 acres) of vineyards, and the production was 108,100 tonnes in 2008. There are also some additional 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) of vineyards dedicated to table grapes. Red wine dominates the Macedonian wine production, with around 80 per cent.

Within the European Union, "Macedonia" (Μακεδονία) is a protected geographical indication (PGI) for wine from the Greek region of Macedonia.

    History

While part of Yugoslavia, Macedonia was a major producer of wine. In the 1980s, it accounted for around two-thirds of the Yugoslav wine production. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, the Macedonian wine production decreased dramatically, from 1.8 million hectoliters in the mid-1990s to 447,000 hl in 2002.

    Wine regions

    Macedonia has three wine-growing regions:

  • Povardarie, in the valley of river Vardar, mostly around the towns of Negotino and Kavadarci. It is the most important region both in terms of quantity and wine quality.
  • Macedonian language

Macedonian (/ˌmæsˈdniən/; македонски јазик, tr. makedonski jazik, pronounced [maˈkɛdɔnski ˈjazik]) is a South Slavic language, spoken as a first language by around two million people, principally in the Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian diaspora, with a smaller number of speakers throughout the transnational region of Macedonia. It is the official language of the Republic of Macedonia and an official minority language in parts of Albania, Romania and Serbia.

Standard Macedonian was implemented as the official language of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia in 1945 and has since developed a modern literature. Most of the codification was formalized during the same period.

Macedonian dialects form a continuum with Bulgarian dialects; they in turn form a broader continuum with Serbo-Croatian through the transitional Torlakian dialects.

The name of the Macedonian language is a matter of political controversy in Greece and Bulgaria as is its distinctiveness compared to Bulgarian in Bulgaria.
