Maakhir University (Somali: Jaamacada Maakhir, Arabic: جامعة ماخر) is a university in the northern Sanaag (Maakhir) region of Somalia.
Situated in Badhan, the college was established in 2009 with the purpose of providing affordable higher education to residents of the province and elsewhere in the nation. According to the institution's website, Maakhir University offers undergraduate degrees with the ultimate goal of contributing to the development of Somali society.
The Sanaag/Maakhir diaspora community has been the university's main sponsor since the outbreak of Somalia's civil war in the early 1990s. Members purchased equipment from abroad, which they then sent to the institution. The latter contributions include vehicles and office equipment. Expatriates from the region have also contributed to the construction of a new university campus, a project that has been in the works for the last couple of years.
Additionally, through its representative to Kuwait, Faisal Hawar, the Puntland government signed an agreement in Dubai with a Kuwaiti company for the development of facilities at Maakhir University as well as the Garowe International Airport. The deal was valued at $10 million USD and was financed by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED).
Maakhir (Somali: Goboleedka Maakhir, Arabic: ماخر Maakhirian), officially the Maakhir State of Somaliland (Somali: Maamul Goboleedka Maakhiran; Arabic: ولاية ماخر الصومال Wilaayatul baladul Maakhir balad- aṣ-Ṣūmmāal) was an autonomous region in northern Somalia, situated in an area disputed by the Somaliland and Puntland macro-regions. In January 2009, it was incorporated into Somaliland
Maakhir was a self-proclaimed state that represented the political will of the Warsangali Darod within federal Somalia. The Warsangali were one of the principal actors in the creation of the Puntland State as a successor to the Harti Sultanates after the collapse of the central government in Somalia in 1991. However, since the proclamation of an autonomous Puntland in 1998, some Warsangali felt that they were sidelined while the Majeerteen clan assumed a hegemonic role in the state. Maakhir was brought back into the Puntland fold by General Abdullahi Ahmed Jama ("Ilkajir"), who contested the Puntland election. General Ilkajir became the de facto leader of Maakhir following the dissolution of the Maakhir administration.
