M-Net Literary Awards

M-Net Literary Awards (1991-2013) was a South African literary award. It was established in 1991 by M-Net (Electronic Media Network), a South African television station. It was among South Africa's most prestigious literary honors. The prize was created to encourage the writing of quality novels by South African authors in one of South Africa's 11 official languages. The award was suspended indefinitely after the 2013 season.

Winners received a prize of R50,000 beginning in 2011, up from R30,000 in previous years. M-Net also had a film category, which offered a prize for a novel showing the greatest promise for translation into a visual medium.

M-Net Movies

M-Net Movies is a group of nine television channels broadcast by South African pay TV satellite network DStv. The channels broadcast films based on genre. As of October 2012, there are nine channels:

History

The original two M-Net movie channels, Movie Magic 1 and Movie Magic 2, were renamed M-Net Movies 1 and M-Net Movies 2, respectively, in 2005. Two additional movie channels, M-Net Movies Stars and M-Net Movies Action, were later launched. In October 2012, the original two movie channels were replaced with six HD channels which grouped films according to genre. These new channels, along with the pre-existing Action, Stars and Zone, made for a total of nine movie channels.

M Network

M Network was a video game division of Mattel that, in the 1980s, produced games in cartridge format for the Atari 2600 video game system.

History

In the early 1980s, Mattel's Intellivision video game console was a direct competitor to Atari's Video Computer System (VCS), better known as the Atari 2600. Although Mattel designed and produced video game cartridges for their own system, they also designed simplified versions of many of their games for the 2600 under the M Network label.

M Network produced home ports of popular arcade games, including BurgerTime, Bump 'n' Jump and Lock 'n' Chase (all 1982) as well as original titles such as Tron: Deadly Discs (1982 – based on the Disney movie) and Kool-Aid Man (1983), one of the earliest "promogames", originally available only via mail order by sending in UPC symbols from Kool-Aid containers.

Mattel programmers (christened by TV Guide as the "Blue Sky Rangers") were also encouraged to develop video game tie-ins with other Mattel properties; games such as Masters of the Universe: He Man (1982), leveraging Mattel's Masters of the Universe media franchise, were released.

M-Net

M-Net (originally an abbreviation of Electronic Media Network) is a subscription-funded television channel broadcast in South Africa. It was established by Naspers in 1986. The channel broadcasts both local and international programming, including general entertainment, children's series, sport and movies. While the TV signal is generally encrypted, M-Net showed some programmes 'free to air' in its "Open Time" slot between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., until the slot closed on 1 April 2007.

In the early 1990s, M-Net added a second analog channel called Community Services Network (CSN), and began digital broadcasting via satellite to the rest of Africa, via its sister company MultiChoice. With the introduction of MultiChoice's multi-channel digital satellite TV service, DStv, in 1995, several different channels have been created to complement the original M-Net channel, including M-Net Series and several movie channels based on film genre.

Early years

The idea of a pay-TV network in South Africa came to life in the mid-1980s, when Nasionale Pers (Naspers) - headed by executive Koos Bekker — started to promote the idea to the country's other three largest media corporations: Times Media Ltd (now Avusa/BDFM), Argus (now the Independent Group) and Perskor (which is now defunct). The newspapers and magazines published by Naspers had lost a lot of advertising revenue to the SABC after the arrival of television and for this reason, according to some sources, the National Party government wanted Naspers to run its own television network. Initially, the plan was for M-Net to be jointly owned by the four media corporations, with the Natal Witness also having a small share in the station. However, as time went on, the project became that of Naspers only.

Mr. Clean

Mr. Clean is a brand name and mascot fully owned by Procter & Gamble used for a cleaning solution and related products, and as "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser", for a melamine foam cleaner.

History

Mr. Clean was created by Linwood Burton, a marine ship cleaning businessman with accounts throughout the east coast of the United States and his friend, Mathusan Chandramohan, a rich entrepreneur from Sri Lanka. In the past, ships had to be cleaned using abrasives or solvents that were able to cut successfully through embedded grease and grime; however, past solvents were so dangerous to workers that Burton was motivated to finding a solution that was effective and less caustic. Burton, with fundamental knowledge in chemistry, developed Mr. Clean in an effort to clean ships without having to pay significant premiums in disability claims for his workers. He later sold the product to Procter & Gamble in 1958.

Mr. Clean made his television commercial debut in 1958, initially portrayed in the live-action versions by character actor House Peters, Jr.. Within the first six months of the introduction, Mr. Clean became the best-selling household cleaner on the market. In May 1963, Mr. Clean was assigned a first name Veritably Clean as a result of the "Give Mr. Clean a First Name" promotion. A contest entry in the December 1962 issue of Everywoman's Family Circle magazine offered a top prize of "A completely furnished house, worth $30,000, to be built on your own lot- or $30,000 cash!" to the winner who was to be notified about 2 months after the entry close date of Feb 28,1963. 1000 Motorola second prizes were offered to the next 1000 winners.

M-Net Series

M-Net Series is a television network broadcast by South African pay TV satellite network M-Net on the DStv platform. Most of the programmes broadcast are unique to M-Net Series but some are repeats of episodes already shown on M-Net. The network originally consisted of three individual channels, but two, M-Net Series Showcase and M-Net Series Reality were discontinued in October 2014, leaving one channel, M-Net Series Zone remaining. Which in late 2014 were rebranded to VUZU AMP & M-Net City respectively also with the introduction of a premium series channel called M-Net Edge that plays mostly HBO series.

A single series channel was introduced in 2000 as a sister channel to the original M-Net channel. On 9 July 2013, this channel was split into three, namely M-Net Series Showcase, M-Net Series Reality and M-Net Series Zone. On 11 September 2014, it was announced that Series Showcase and Series Reality would be discontinued and replaced with two new channels, VUZU AMP and M-Net Edge, on 20 and 13 October, respectively.
