Luke Hemsworth

Luke Hemsworth (5 November 1980) is an Australian actor who is best known for his role as Nathan Tyson in the TV series Neighbours.

Early life

Luke Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia on November 5, 1980 to Leonie, an English teacher, and Craig Hemsworth, a social-services counselor. He is the older brother of actors Chris and Liam Hemsworth.

Career

Hemsworth started his career on the Australian soap opera Neighbours as Nathan Tyson. Mainly a television actor, Hemsworth has appeared in TV series such as The Saddle Club, Blue Heelers, Last Man Standing, All Saints, and Satisfaction. In 2012, he starred in the 6-part miniseries Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms as Gregory "Shadow" Campbell. He is set to star in the upcoming Australian War Film The 34th Battalion as Robinson.

Hemsworth is a small town and civil parish on the edge of West Yorkshire, England. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it forms part of the City of Wakefield, and has a population of 13,311.

It was a one-industry town, where coal mining employed the vast majority of residents, and the closure of the pits during the 1980s led to huge levels of unemployment and deprivation in the area. Hemsworth, along with nearby villages such as Ackworth, Fitzwilliam, Havercroft, Ryhill, South Elmsall and South Kirkby was made into a special regeneration area, and fortunes have improved as a result.

The Hemsworth constituency is famous for being the place where Labour votes were said to be "weighed rather than counted" during the 1960s and 1970s, but the town is not even so heavily Labour-voting as it once was. The town's Member of Parliament is Jon Trickett, a former leader of Leeds council.

In May 2005, the Office for National Statistics estimated that unemployment in Hemsworth was just 2.8%. This marks progress from periods in the previous two decades when it could reach as high as 50%.

Hemsworth is a constituency in West Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons since 1996 by Jon Trickett of the Labour Party.

Constituency profile

The constituency comprises former coal mining towns and villages that also provided some of the workforce for the manufacturing bases of the town of Barnsley to the south and cities of Wakefield and Leeds to the northwest. Many constituents still commute to these today. Nearby to the east over the border in North Yorkshire is Kellingley Colliery, one of six functional coal mines and only three deep mines still in major production. It is the Labour Party's longest held seat, having elected its first Labour MP in 1918, and been in continuous existence since that date.

History

From the 1966 to February 1974 general elections (inclusive), Hemsworth was the safest seat for any party in the UK: the Labour vote had peaked in 1966 at 85.39% and consistently exceeded 80% from 1935 until October 1974 when the Liberal Party contested the seat for the first time since 1923. Successive boundary changes removed certain ex-mining communities to the new Barnsley East constituency in 1983: this and the addition of the highest income part of Wakefield in 1997 slightly reduced Labour's dominance, but Hemsworth remains a safe seat.
