Loukhi (Russian: Лоухи; Finnish and Karelian: Louhi) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) and the administrative center of Loukhsky District[1] of the Republic of Karelia, Russia, located on the shore of Lake Panovo, 500 kilometers (310 mi) north of Petrozavodsk. Population: 4,778 (2010 Census preliminary results);[2] 5,920 (2002 Census);[3] 6,405 (1989 Census).[4]
It was founded in 1912–1914 due to the construction of a railroad. It was granted urban-type settlement status in 1944.
In 1978, Korean Air Lines Flight 902 was forced to land at the nearby Korpijärvi Lake after being attacked by Soviet aircraft.
Loukhi-3 is an air base in the Republic of Karelia, Russia located 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) west of Loukhi. It is a minor airstrip with only turnarounds and a 400-meter central taxiway.
Loukhi had some use during World War II and probably maintained forward fighter deployments in the 1950s and 1960s.
