Louis Renou

Louis Renou (French: [ʁənu]; 26 October 1896 – 18 August 1966) was the pre-eminent French Indologist of the twentieth century.

After passing the agrégation examination in 1920, Louis Renou taught for a year at the lycee in Rouen. He then took a sabbatical, read the works of Sanskrit scholars and attended the classes of Antoine Meillet. Henceforth he opted exclusively for the study of Sanskrit. He attended the lectures of Jules Bloch at the Ecole des hautes etudes. The work he did at this time gave rise to Les maitres de la philologie vedique (1928). His doctoral thesis, submitted in 1925, was La valeur du parfait dans les hymnes vediques. After a short time at the Faculte de lettres in Lyon, he moved to L'ecole des hautes etudes and then to the Sorbonne where he succeeded Alfred A. Foucher. In 1946 he was elected to the Academie des Inscriptions.

In the following years he undertook three journeys: India in 1948-1949, Yale University in 1953, and Tokyo in 1954-1956 where he was director of the Maison franco-japonaise. He hardly travelled after this.

Lucy Brown

by: Chris Norman

In a lonely railway station
There's a man who sits and wonders
If he ever will be going home again
And his eyes can still remember
As he sees the faded picture
Of the girl who said she'd always be his friend
So he lights another cigarette
And wonders if she'll ever get the message
In the letter that he sent
Chorus:
Lucy Brown,
We been so long apart now I'm cryin'
I'm goin' down
Though I'm tryin'
Feel I'm dyin'!
Lucy Brown
Now we're so far apart feel I'm sinkin',
Since I been gone
I been thinkin',
Can't help thinkin'
Of Lucy Brown
Well he hasn't got the money
To get back to the city,
So he sits alone and stares into the floor
Then he hears a whistle blowin'
As a train pulls in the station
And he looks up and she's standin' by the door
And she smiles at him so sweetly
As she's holdin' up the letter
And he looks at her and says to her once more
Chorus twice:
Lucy Brown,
We been so far apart now I'm cryin'
I been so down,
I was tryin',
I was dyin'
Lucy Brown,
We been so far apart I been sinkin'
Since I been gone
I been thinkin',
Can't help thinkin'
