Loon Lake (California)

Loon Lake Reservoir is a reservoir in the El Dorado National Forest of El Dorado County, California, United States. The 76,200 acre·ft (94,000,000 m³) lake is formed by Loon Lake Dam, completed in 1963 as part of the Upper American River Project by Sacramento Municipal Utility District to conserve spring snow melt runoff for use during the summer and autumn for hydroelectric power production. Loon Lake Dam impounds water at the headwaters of Gerle Creek which, prior to the dam, flowed intermittently through (natural) Loon and Pleasant Lakes. But most of the water now stored in Loon Lake Reservoir arrives from Buck Island Reservoir in the adjacent Rubicon River watershed by way of the Buck-Loon Tunnel. Nearby is Loon Lake Chalet, a popular winter recreation destination. In summer, a boat ramp for water sports and camping are available, but the area is less popular than nearby Union Valley Reservoir and Rubicon Trail.

It is popularly referred to as Loon Lake, although strictly speaking this is the name of the former lake now inundated by the dam. Boaters still refer to the northeast portion of the reservoir as the Pleasant Lake Arm, the portion over the inundated Pleasant Lake.

Loon Lake (Lake County, Illinois)

Loon Lake is a glacial lake found in northern Lake County, Illinois, United States. It comprises three lakes; East Loon, West Loon, and North Loon. (North Loon is not connected). It is located near the town of Antioch, IL, near the intersection of Route 83 and Grass Lake Rd. It is home to many different species of fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Some of which are endangered species, included, but not limited to, the blacknose shiner.

Hydrography

West Loon Lake is a glacial lake that has a maximum depth of 38–44 feet. It has an area of 166 acres (0.7 km²) and more than 2.1 miles (3.4 km) of shoreline. It is an extremely clear lake, transparency of the lake is 15–18 feet depending on the time of year. Water clarity has been at the highest level in 15 years.

East Loon Lake is a Glacial lake that has a maximum depth of 26–28 feet. It is slightly larger than West Loon Lake with an area of 168 acres (0.7 km²) and more than 4.8 miles (7.7 km) of shoreline. East Loon has a different ecological makeup; compared to West Loon, it is more of a nature lake then a recreational lake. The clarity of this lake is much poorer than West, only 5–7 feet.

Loon Lake (Oregon)

Loon Lake is a 294-acre (119 ha) lake located in Douglas County in the Oregon Coast Range of the United States, 15 miles (24 km) east-southeast of Reedsport, Oregon at an elevation of 392 feet (119 m). The lake is about 2 miles (3.2 km) long with a maximum width of about 0.4 miles (0.64 km), and is over 100 feet (30 m) deep in some places.

The lake is "a classic example of a landslide lake", dammed by a slide of sandstone blocks which fell into the Lake Creek valley about 1,400 years ago. The lake was discovered in 1852 and named for the loons found on its waters.
