Look (company)

Look is a French manufacturer of high-end ski bindings, bicycle frames, equipment, and apparel.

History

Established in Nevers, France in 1951, Look was originally a ski equipment manufacturer. The company produces bindings under its own name and others such as Rossignol and Dynastar. The partnership with Rossignol (which later merged with Dynastar) made Look a leading binding manufacturer along with the Marker brand. Look pioneered a new binding, that set it apart from Marker in freestyle. This was branded with the pivot system (FKS for Rossignol). Following a change in ownership, it was replaced in 2008 with the PX series.

In the 1980s Look introduced a clipless pedal for cycling based on equipment for ski bindings. A spring-loaded latch on the top of the pedal held a cleat that was bolted to the sole of a shoe, a twist of the foot releasing the hold. They are called pédales automatiques (automatic pedals) in French. They were sold from 1984, and in 1985 Bernard Hinault used them to win the Tour de France. They were said to be safer and more comfortable than toe-clips. By 2000 the pedal was in widespread use on road bikes ("racing" bikes), track bikes, and mountain bikes, especially among experienced riders.

Look (UK magazine)

Look is a glossy high street fashion and celebrity weekly magazine for young women. It is published by IPC Media, and edited by Ali Hall. The magazine focuses on fashion, high street shopping advice, celebrity style and news, and real-life stories.

History

Launched in February 2007, Look delivered a debut ABC of 318,907 making it the most successful launch in 17 years. It is a weekly high street fashion magazine for women. One of its most popular franchises is High Street Hottest, which showcases the latest products to hit the high street.

Look.co.uk was launched in 2008. It showcases high street fashion, beauty and celebrity style news.

Rated number 14 out of 22 for the second half of 2013Look magazine offers fashion, shopping and beauty advice for the average woman, as well as celebrity gossip. The magazine also brings news coverage of well-known people in the media. It also uses models with more average sized bodies to show off fashion.

As conducted by the Audit Bureau of Circulation in July to December 2013, the magazine company received a total of 187,884 readers whereas the National Readership Survey reported 487,000 during October 2012 to September 2013.

Look (American magazine)

Look was a bi-weekly, general-interest magazine published in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1937 to 1971, with more of an emphasis on photographs than articles. A large-size magazine of 11 by 14 inches, it was generally considered the also-ran to Life magazine, which began publication months earlier and ended in 1972.

It is known for helping launch the career of film director Stanley Kubrick, who was a staff photographer.

Origin

Gardner "Mike" Cowles, Jr. (1903–1985), the magazine's co-founder (with his brother John) and first editor, was executive editor of The Des Moines Register and The Des Moines Tribune. When the first issue went on sale in early 1937, it sold 705,000 copies.

Although planned to begin with the January 1937 issue, the actual first issue of Look to be distributed was the February 1937 issue, numbered as Volume 1, Number 2. It was published monthly for five issues (February–May 1937), then switched to bi-weekly starting with the May 11, 1937 issue. Page numbering on early issue counted the front cover as page one. Early issues, subtitled Monthly Picture Magazine, carried no advertising.

Gemstone

A gemstone or gem (also called a fine gem, jewel, or a precious or semi-precious stone) is a piece of mineral crystal, which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However, certain rocks (such as lapis lazuli) or organic materials that are not minerals (such as amber or jet), are also used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their luster or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. Apart from jewelry, from earliest antiquity engraved gems and hardstone carvings, such as cups, were major luxury art forms. A gem maker is called a lapidary or gemcutter; a diamond worker is a diamantaire.

Gem (Dutch band)

GEM is a rock band from Utrecht, The Netherlands. The five-piece band was founded in 2003, and has released four albums of which Hunters Go Hungry (2011) is the newest.

History

In 2003 when singer Maurits Westerik joined with guitarist Bas de Graaff and bassist Vincent Lemmen. With the addition of second guitarist Simon Bonner the band recorded its first demo in Studio Moskou in Utrecht. Tony van Best drummed on the tracks.

Having heard that The Libertines were to play in the Melkweg in Amsterdam, Westerik sent links to some of their MP3s, and asked if the band could play as opening act. The programmers at the Melkweg agreed. The band were the subject of a feature story on the channel 3VOOR12, and were included in a compilation album in the Unsigned Series, an initiative of the Dutch Pop Institute. The record was called College Radio: Alternative Rock Songs. With two new band members, Jeroen Kikkert (bass) and Ilco Slikker (drums), the band recorded two tracks for the album the studio of producer Frans Hagenaars. They also toured for the Unsigned project with Eleven, zZz and other bands.
