Loneliness

Loneliness is a complex and usually unpleasant emotional response to isolation or lack of companionship. Loneliness typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connectedness or communality with other beings, both in the present and extending into the future. As such, loneliness can be felt even when surrounded by other people. The causes of loneliness are varied and include social, mental or emotional factors.

Research has shown that loneliness is widely prevalent throughout society among people in marriages, relationships, families, veterans and successful careers. It has been a long explored theme in the literature of human beings since classical antiquity. Loneliness has also been described as social pain — a psychological mechanism meant to alert an individual of isolation and motivate him/her to seek social connections.

Common causes

People can experience loneliness for many reasons and many life events may cause it, like the lack of friendship relations during childhood and adolescence, or the physical absence of meaningful people around a person. At the same time, loneliness may be a symptom of another social or psychological problem, such as chronic depression.

Sanchez (singer)

Kevin Anthony Jackson (born 30 November 1964), better known as Sanchez, is a Jamaican reggae singer and record producer. He is best known as Billboard reggae songs such as "Frenzy", "One In A Million", "I'm Missing You", "I Can't Wait", "Fall in Love", "Loneliness", "Never Dis Di Man", "In Your Eyes" and "Pretty Girl". He started as a singer in 1987.

Biography

Born in Kingston, Jackson grew up in the Stony Hill and Waterford areas. He was given the nickname 'Sanchez' due to his football skills - a reference to a footballer of that name. He sang from an early age in the Rehoboth Apostolic Church choir in St Catherine. After working with several Kingston sound systems, first as selector for the Rambo Mango sound system, he began recording and had his first hit with "Lady In Red", recorded for producer Red Man in 1987. By 1988 he was one of Jamaica's most popular singers, and at his performance at Reggae Sunsplash that year he was called back for six encores. He had further big hits with "Loneliness Leave Me Alone", produced by Winston Riley, and with his version of Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You", which was included on the Philip "Fatis" Burrell-produced Number One album (1989). He has worked with several of Jamaica's other top producers, including King Jammy, Bobby Digital, and Donovan Germain.

Scooter (motorcycle)

A scooter or motor scooter is a motorcycle with step-through frame and a platform for the rider's feet. Elements of scooter design have been present in some of the earliest motorcycles, and motorcycles identifiable as scooters have been made from 1914 or earlier. Scooter development continued in Europe and the United States between the World Wars.

The global popularity of scooters dates from the post-World War II introductions of the Vespa and the Lambretta. These scooters were intended to provide low-power personal transportation (engines from 50 to 250 cc or 3.1 to 15.3 cu in). The original layout is still widely used in this application. Maxi-scooters, with engines from 250 to 850 cc (15 to 52 cu in) have been developed for Western markets.

Scooters are popular for personal transport, partly due to being cheap to buy, easy to operate and convenient to park and store. Licensing requirements for scooters are easier and cheaper than for cars in most parts of the world, and insurance is usually cheaper.

Diver propulsion vehicle

A diver propulsion vehicle (DPV, also known as an underwater propulsion vehicle or underwater scooter) is an item of diving equipment used by scuba and rebreather divers to increase range underwater. Range is restricted by the amount of breathing gas that can be carried, the rate at which that breathing gas is consumed under exertion, and the time limits imposed by the dive tables to avoid decompression sickness. DPVs can have military application.

Structure

A DPV usually consists of a pressure resistant watertight casing containing a battery-powered electric motor, which drives a propeller. The design must ensure that the propeller cannot harm the diver, diving equipment or marine life, the vehicle cannot be accidentally started or run away from the diver, and it remains neutrally buoyant while in use underwater.

Application

DPVs are useful for extending the range of a diver that is otherwise restricted by the amount of breathing gas that can be carried, the rate at which that breathing gas is consumed under exertion, diver fatigue, and the time limits imposed by the dive tables to avoid decompression sickness. Typical uses include cave diving and technical diving where the vehicles help move bulky equipment and make better use of the limited underwater time imposed by the decompression requirements of deep diving.

Scooter (Belgian band)

Scooter was a Belgian pop band from Antwerp, that started in 1979 as Scooter on the Road. In 1981, they released the singles "Tattoo Turkey" and "Peppermint Girl". Due to guitarist Jan Fraeyman suffering from terminal illness he was replaced by Bert Decorte (from The Misters). Sadly, shortly after the release of their debut album One by One (1981), guitarist Jan Fraeyman died.

Scooter scored a megahit in Belgium ‘You (don’t want to be number one’) and won the Summerhit of 1981 award, an annual prize awarded by the Flemish broadcaster Radio 2.

The album “One by One” was produced by the drummer of the band, Herwig Duchateau, who was later successful as the producer of bands like The Bet, Schmutz, Won Ton Ton, The Machines, e.a.).

Scooter, now with guitarist Jan Verheyen after Bert Decorte left the band, released two more albums: Charm and Oblivion with American sounding songs like "Will I Ever Recover From You" (1982), "Stand Out" (1982) and "Minute by minute" (1983). In 1982, shortly after the release of Charm, keyboard player Pit Verlinde left the band.
