Lloyd's List

Lloyd's List is one of the world's oldest continuously running journals, having provided weekly shipping news in London as early as 1734. Now published daily, a recent issue was numbered 60,850 (2013). Known simply as 'London Press', popularly known Lloyd's was begun by Edward Lloyd, the proprietor of Lloyd's Coffee House in the City of London as a reliable but terse source of information for the merchants' agents and insurance underwriters who met regularly in his establishment in Lombard Street to negotiate insurance coverage for trading vessels. The newspaper survives today to fulfil a similar purpose, although its circulation is now international and it appears daily. As well as shipping news, Lloyd's today covers marine insurance, offshore energy, logistics, publication of Journal on marketing, research, global trade and law. Greek shipowners are ranked in the top for all kinds of ships, including first for tankers and bulk carriers.

History

Predecessor publications are known. One historian, Michael Palmer, claims: "No later than January 1692, Lloyd began publishing a weekly newsletter, ‘Ships Arrived at and Departed from several Ports of England, as I have Account of them in London... [and] An Account of what English Shipping and Foreign Ships for England, I hear of in Foreign Ports’". However, claims that Lloyd's List is the oldest or second-oldest continuously published newspaper in the world are disputed. The World Association of Newspapers lists three earlier, extant titles.

Lloyd's of London

Lloyd's of London, generally known simply as Lloyd's, is an insurance market located in London's primary financial district, the City of London. Unlike most of its competitors in the industry, it is not a company but rather is a corporate body governed by the Lloyd's Act of 1871 and subsequent Acts of Parliament. Lloyd's serves as a partially mutualised marketplace within which multiple financial backers come together to pool and spread risk. These underwriters, or "members", are a collection of both corporations and private individuals, the latter being traditionally known as "Names".

The insurance business underwritten at Lloyd's is predominantly general insurance and reinsurance, although a small number of syndicates write term life assurance. The market has its roots in marine insurance and was founded by Edward Lloyd at his coffee house on Tower Street in 1688. Today, it is based in a dedicated building on Lime Street, opened in 1986. Its motto is Fidentia, Latin for "confidence".
