Lloyd Powell

Lloyd Powell (22 August 1888 – 25 March 1975) was an English, later Canadian pianist and teacher.

Career

Lloyd Ioan Powell was born in Ironbridge, Shropshire in 1888. His parents were Welsh. He studied at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London from the age of 10. His teachers were Marmaduke Barton (piano; a student of Bernhard Stavenhagen), Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (composition) and Sir Frederick Bridge (counterpoint). He won the Hopkinson Gold Medal for piano performance and the Dannreuther Prize for the best piano concerto performance. Further studies were undertaken with Ferruccio Busoni in Basel, and in Berlin.

Powell toured in Paris, Berlin, England and Scotland, and spent many years as an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, visiting places such as Australia, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Ceylon, the West Indies and Java.

He became a Professor of Pianoforte at the RCM in 1919. His students at the RCM included the blind pianist Alec Templeton; and Isador Goodman, in whom Powell instilled the idea that to be a good pianist, one must also teach the piano. Goodman took over Powell's teaching duties there when the latter was examining in Canada, and later became a teacher at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for 50 years.

Powell (surname)

Powell is a traditional Welsh surname. It is sometimes said to mean "Son of the Servant of St. Paul", but is more likely to be a patronymic from the Welsh first name Howel. The Old Celtic term "ap" means "son of", hence ap Howel was eventually spelled as Powell. At the time of the British Census of 1881, the frequency of the surname Powell was highest in Brecknockshire (21.9 times the British average), followed by Radnorshire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Shropshire, Glamorgan, Flintshire, Denbighshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.

Powell is a feature on Earth's Moon, a crater in Taurus-Littrow valley. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt landed less than 1 km northeast of it in 1972, on the Apollo 17 mission, but they did not visit it.

To the north of Powell is Trident and the landing site. To the northwest are Camelot and Horatio, and to the northeast is Sherlock. Steno and Emory are to the southeast.

The crater was named by the astronauts after John Wesley Powell, geologist and explorer of the American West.

Powell Street Station

Powell Street is a shared Muni Metro and Bay Area Rapid Transit station near the intersection of Market Street and Powell Street in downtown San Francisco. The station is located along the Market Street Subway and extends underground from Fourth Street to Fifth Street. Hallidie Plaza connects to the station on the north side of Market Street. Like all of the shared BART and Muni stations on the Market Street Subway, the concourse mezzanine is on the first level down, an island platform for the Muni Metro is on the second level down, and the island platform for BART is on the third level down.

The Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde cable car lines turn around at Powell and Market, above the station. Union Square is three blocks north of the station, the Westfield San Francisco Centre is on Market at Powell and the old United States Mint building is located one block away at Fifth Street and Mission Street. Also nearby is the famous Yerba Buena Gardens and Moscone Center, each about a block away, near Mission Street on 4th. Within the area is the The Metreon shopping center and movie theater. Lloyd is a 2001 American comedy film.

Plot

The film is based on an 11-year-old child named Lloyd, and he is the "class clown." He often gets in trouble with teachers, one of which is very strict. When he tries to rebel, he is put into a class for "less enthusiastic students." Once there, he teams up with other students in the group: Troy, Carla, and Storm. He soon falls in love with the class' newest member, Tracy. However, she is taken by Storm. When Lloyd talks to his mother, she tells him that he can still win her back by being himself.

The role of Lloyd is played by Todd Bosley. Tom Arnold, a friend of the producers, played a small role.

Lloyd (name)

Lloyd is a name originating with the Welsh adjective llwyd, most often understood as meaning "grey" but with other meanings as well. The name can be used both as a personal name and as a surname. The name has many variations and a few derivations, mainly as a result of the difficulty in representing the initial double-L for non-Welsh speakers and the translation of the Welsh diphthong ŵy. Lloyd is the most common form of the name encountered in the modern era, with the Welsh spelling Llwyd increasingly common in recent times.
