Liu Hao (simplified Chinese: 刘浩; traditional Chinese: 劉浩; pinyin: Líu Hào; born 1968 in Shanghai) is a Chinese filmmaker. He first rose to prominence in the early to mid-2000s.

Early life

Born and raised in Shanghai, Liu Hao spent much of his youth watching films by Ren Xudong and Cheng Yin and, as he grew older, the works of the fifth generation directors. In 1995, as his interest in film grew, Liu, now in his mid-20s, decided to apply to the Beijing Film Academy. Though his application was accepted, the Academy refused to allow him to start, stating that 27 was simply too old. Undeterred, Liu raised ¥25,000 from banks to make a short Beijing Opera music video which went on to win a prize in Shanghai. With his name on the map, Liu was allowed to enter the 1997 incoming class of the Beijing Film Academy.

Directorial career

After graduating, Liu started his career with the independent film, Chen Mo and Meiting (2002). The film, about a romance between flower-vendor boy and a massage parlor girl, was never released in China. It nevertheless was screened abroad, and won a special mention at the Berlin International Film Festival and a NETPAC award.

Liu Hao (athlete)

Liu Hao (Chinese: 刘昊; born 19 November 1968) is a Chinese former track and field athlete who competed in the men's shot put. His personal best for the event is 19.72 m (64 ft 8¹⁄₄ in), set in 1993.

He was among Asia's best shot putters in the 1990s. He was a two-time champion at the Asian Games and was the 1993 gold medallist at the Asian Athletics Championships. A five-time winner at the Chinese outdoor championships, he never represented his country on the global stage. He was the gold medallist at the 2001 East Asian Games.

Career

Based in Beijing, Liu began to establish himself at national level in his early twenties. A personal best of 18.78 m (61 ft 7¹⁄₄ in) in 1990 was followed by an improvement to 19.04 m (62 ft 5¹⁄₂ in) in 1992 – a mark which ranked him second at the Chinese Athletics Championships to Ma Yongfeng and placed him within the top 100 globally that year. He had his breakthrough on the international scene the following year. He progressively improved his best over the 1993 season, culminating in a lifetime best throw of 19.72 m (64 ft 8¹⁄₄ in) to win the title at the 7th National Games of China. After this first victory at national level, he was selected for the 1993 Asian Athletics Championships and won the gold medal there, beating runner-up Bilal Saad Mubarak by a margin of nearly 80 cm. His season's best placed him within the top forty in the world and made him the top ranked Asian shot putter for the year.

Liu Hao (weightlifter)

Liu Hao (born 20 July 1989) is a Chinese weightlifter. He won the gold medal in Weightlifting at the 2014 Asian Games.
