John Palm

John Palm (13 June 1885 – 24 February 1925) was a Curaçao-born composer.

Biography

Johan Antoine Palm—better known as John Palm—was a grandson of Jan Gerard Palm (1831-1906), who is often referred to as the "father of Curaçao classical music". Like his cousin Jacobo Palm and his brother Rudolph Palm, John started at music lessons from his grandfather at a young age.

Palm played several musical instruments such as piano, clarinet and flute. He joined some orchestras such as "Los Dispuestos" and a sextet "Los seis". With his favorite instrument the clarinet, John Palm gave many clarinet solos. Like Frederique Chopin, John died at the relatively young age of 39 due to tuberculosis, in Curaçao.

Compositions

As a composer Palm wrote waltzes including "La Belleza", "Club X", "Emma", "La Veloce"" "Ma Pensee", "Gozar sufriendo" and "Nocturno."

Arcade

An arcade emulator is a program that emulates one or more arcade games on a different computer, such as a PC. The first known arcade emulation available publicly was the Williams Digital Arcade series from Digital Eclipse Software, released for the Macintosh in 1994. This series featured the Williams Electronics' arcade classics Joust,Defender and Robotron: 2084. In 1995, it was repackaged and expanded upon as Williams Arcade Classics for the PC. DASArcade (written by David Alan Spicer) was arguably the first PC-based multiple arcade game emulator. This was distinct from Digital Eclipse's release in that only one program was required to emulate more than one arcade game, rather than one program per game. The first version of DASArcade was released later in 1995 and emulated a few titles including Pac-Man and Frogger (two years before MAME which now dominates arcade emulation). DASArcade evolved into Sparcade which emulates over 70 games.

Little John

John Little (Robin Hood changed his name into Little John) was a legendary fellow outlaw of Robin Hood. He was said to be Robin's chief lieutenant and second-in-command of the Merry Men. The sobriquet "Little" is a form of irony, as he is usually depicted as a gigantic, seven-foot-tall warrior of the British forests, skilled with bow and quarterstaff.

Folklore

Little John appears in the earliest recorded Robin Hood ballads and stories, and in the earliest chronicle references to Robin Hood, by Andrew of Wyntoun in about 1420 and by Walter Bower in about 1440, neither of which refer to any other of the Merry Men. In the early tales, Little John is shown to be intelligent and highly capable. In A Gest of Robyn Hode, he captures the sorrowful knight and, when Robin Hood decides to pay the knight's mortgage for him, accompanies him as a servant. In Robin Hood's Death, he is the only one of the Merry Men that Robin takes with him. In the 15th-century ballad commonly called "Robin Hood and the Monk", Little John leaves in anger after a dispute with Robin. When Robin Hood is captured, it is Little John who plans his leader's rescue. In thanks, Robin offers Little John leadership of the band, but John refuses. Later depictions of Little John portray him as less cunning.

Little John (musician)

John McMorris (born 1970), better known as Little John, is a Jamaican dancehall musician best known for his 1980s recordings.

History

Born 1970 in Kingston, Jamaica, Little John was so called as he began performing and recording at the age of nine. He first recorded for Captain Sinbad's Youth In Progress label (including debut single "51 Storm"), and is regarded by some as the first dancehall singer, known for his ability to create lyrics over any backing track. After getting his break with Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion organisation, he performed with sound systems such as Romantic Hi Fi, Kilimanjaro, Gemini, and Henry "Junjo" Lawes' Volcano Hi Power. He recorded for many producers in the 1980s, notably for Lawes, Joseph Hoo Kim, George Phang, Jah Thomas, and King Jammy.

He continued to record in the 1990s including the Winston Holness-produced Boombastic (1990), and in the 21st century released the album Build Back Yard (2006). He also continued to perform live, including paying tribute to the late Sugar Minott at Reggae Sumfest in 2010.

Little John (film)

Little John is a 2001 trilingual fantasy film written, Executive Produced and directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. Bentley Mitchum and Jyothika play the lead roles with Anupam Kher, Prakash Raj and Nassar playing supporting roles. The film released in Tamil, Hindi and English with Pravin Mani composing the music for the project. The film opened to above average reviews and did moderate business at the box office.

Plot

The film opens with an historical story in which the goddess Parvathi while performing dance with her husband Lord Shiva drops her nose stud named "Mookuththi" on the Earth and because of which a temple was raised named "Mookuththi Amman temple" in Tamil Nadu. The nose stud has many powers in it and so an evil powered soul named "Kaalabhairav"(Prakash Raj) waits one thousand years patiently to capture it.
