Criminal Minds is a police procedural that debuted on CBS on September 22, 2005. The series follows a team of profilers from the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) based in Quantico, Virginia. The BAU is part of the FBI National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime. The show differs from many procedural dramas by focusing on profiling the criminal, called the unsub or "unknown subject", rather than the crime itself. The series follows special agents Aaron Hotchner, Derek Morgan, Dr. Spencer Reid, Jennifer "JJ" Jareau, David Rossi and Penelope Garcia trying to profile the unsub. Other recurring characters are Jason Gideon, Elle Greenaway, Emily Prentiss, Ashley Seaver, Dr. Alex Blake and Kate Callahan.
The show was renewed for an eighth season consisting of 24 episodes, on March 14, 2012 by CBS, and the season began airing on September 26, 2012. The series was officially renewed for a ninth season on May 9, 2013. It included the 200th episode which was the 14th episode of the season. On March 13, 2014, Criminal Minds was renewed for a tenth season, which consisted of 23 episodes and premiered on October 1, 2014. On May 11, 2015, CBS renewed the series for an eleventh season, with an initial order for 22 episodes.
The sixth season of Criminal Minds premiered on CBS on September 22, 2010 and ended May 18, 2011.
Before the filming of the season began, it was announced that A.J. Cook had been let go from the series, reportedly due to budget cuts on the show relating to the launch of the Criminal Minds spinoff. Thanks to letters and petitions by fans, Cook was allowed to return for two episodes to wrap up her character's storyline. She later returned as a special guest star in two subsequent episodes of this season. Paget Brewster was a regular for eighteen episodes and was let go from the series as well. Rachel Nichols appeared as a guest star for two episodes and was then promoted as a regular, but was fired after the season finale.
The opening sequence was changed as of this season, more sound and visual effects were added as well as the theme song itself being amplified, an electric guitar playing being added.
The second season of Criminal Minds premiered on CBS on September 20, 2006 and ended May 16, 2007. Lola Glaudini left the show after six episodes,and was replaced by Paget Brewster three episodes later.
Having been a guest star for Season 1, Kirsten Vangsness was promoted to series regular, coming last in the opening titles after A. J. Cook.
The seventh season of Criminal Minds premiered on CBS in the United States on September 21, 2011. Both A. J. Cook and Paget Brewster were rehired by CBS to reprise their roles as Jennifer Jareau and Emily Prentiss. On February 15, 2012, Deadline.com reported that Paget Brewster, who plays Emily Prentiss on the show, would leave Criminal Minds, definitively, once the seventh season was over. All other main actors on the show have secured deals to return for the eighth season. The two-hour season 7 finale, which took place on May 16, 2012, reveals Prentiss making the decision to leave the BAU.
