Linda Lewis

Linda Lewis (born Linda Ann Fredericks, 27 September 1950, West Ham, Essex) is an English vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. Lewis is the oldest of six children, three of whom also had singing careers. She is best known for the singles "Rock-a-Doodle-Doo" (1972), "Sideway Shuffle" (1973), and her version of Rudy Clark's "Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" (1975) albums such as Lark (1972), Not a Little Girl Anymore (1975) and Woman Overboard (1977), and the later Second Nature (1995), which became successful in countries such as Japan. Lewis also provided vocals for others such as David Bowie, Al Kooper, Cat Stevens, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Rick Wakeman, Rod Stewart,Hummingbird, Joan Armatrading and Jamiroquai.

Lewis is a self-taught guitarist and keyboard player, influenced by Harry Nilsson, Billie Holiday and Smokey Robinson, also drawing inspiration from others such as Joni Mitchell. Her music blends folk, funk and soul, a mix of genres that makes Lewis a forerunner to artists such as Des'ree and India.Arie.

Linda Lewis is the author of a series of young adult novels, unofficially known as the "Linda Series". The series was published by Archway Paperbacks from 1985 to 1993. The series centers on Linda Berman and her love life from the fourth grade to the summer after her senior year. The first book, We Hate Everything But Boys (which deals with Linda's sixth grade experiences) is the most successful and well known of the series. It was released twice. According to worldCat, the various books of this series are each found in approximately 100 - 200 U.S. libraries

Due to the success of We Hate Everything But Boys, Ms. Lewis was encouraged to write more books about Linda. In the years that would follow nine more books would be published. Here is a list of the Linda stories:

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (Middlesex cricketer)

Lewis (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who was associated with Middlesex and made his first-class debut in 1830.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.
