Lincoln Road

Lincoln Road Mall is a pedestrian road running east-west parallel between 16th Street and 17th Street in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. Once completely open to vehicular traffic, it now hosts a pedestrian mall replete with shops, restaurants, galleries, and other businesses between Washington Avenue with a traffic accessible street extending east to the Atlantic Ocean and west to Alton Road with a traffic accessible street extending to Biscayne Bay.

History

Originally, Lincoln Road was a forest of mangroves, as was most of Miami Beach. In 1912, Carl Fisher cleared a strip of the mangroves from the Atlantic (east) side of the island to the Biscayne Bay (west) side of the island and it eventually became the town's social center. Fisher himself, maintained a real estate office on Lincoln Road. Over time, Lincoln Road featured premium retail destinations like Bonwit Teller, Saks Fifth Avenue, and even Cadillac and Packard car dealerships.

In the 1950s, Miami Beach architect Morris Lapidus, whose credits include Miami Beach's Fountainebleau and Eden Roc hotels, was commissioned to redesign Lincoln Road. Lapidus' design for Lincoln Road, complete with gardens, fountains, shelters and an amphitheater, reflected the Miami Modern Architecture, or "MiMo", style that Lapidus pioneered in the 1950s. The Road was closed to traffic and became one of the nation's first pedestrian malls.

1111 Lincoln Road

1111 Lincoln Road is a parking garage in the South Beach section of Miami Beach, Florida, designed by the internationally known Swiss architectural firm of Herzog & de Meuron. It is located at the western end of the Lincoln Road Mall at the intersection with Alton Road, and can house some 300 cars. Since its opening in 2010, it has attracted considerable interest because its unique appearance is different from more traditional parking garage designs.

Background

In 2005, local developer Robert Wennett bought a SunTrust Bank office structure that was from 1968 and the Brutalist style. This included an adjacent surface parking lot. Intent upon revitalizing the western end of Lincoln Road Mall, Wennett decided not to completely eliminate the existing structure, but instead build something next to it of equal height – a parking garage.

As Architectural Record has noted, "In the Pantheon of Building Types, the parking garage lurks somewhere in the vicinity of prisons and toll plazas."The New York Times has labeled parking garages "the grim afterthought of American design". But Wennett was determined to do something different, and interviewed ten well-known architects around the globe before choosing Herzog & de Meuron. Construction began in 2008 and entailed closing the western end of Lincoln Road Mall.

Lincoln Road (horse)

Lincoln Road (foaled in 1955) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1958 Jersey Derby as a three-year-old. The son of With Pleasure is best remembered for his runner-up finishes in the 1958 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Racing career

As a two-year-old, Lincoln Road broke his maiden in his third attempt and would win 2 of 7 starts. In 1958, at 3, he finished second seven times. In February, he placed second to Yemen in the Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park at seven furlongs. In April, he stretched out to a mile and one eighth and led most of the way but was caught at the wire and finished second again. This time he lost to Calumet Farm's Tim Tam in the Florida Derby, also at Gulfstream. Calumet Farm-owned Tim Tam went on to become a Dual Classic Winner and win divisional honors as the American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse. Next, in the Biscayne Bay Handicap, the favored Lincoln Road finished second to Belleau Chief, the same rival to whom he would finish third in the Stepping Stone Purse at Churchill Downs. Finishing fourth in that race was Silky Sullivan. On the first Saturday in May, Lincoln Road finished second again to Tim Tam in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
