Lilith (Marvel Comics)

Lilith is the name of two fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The first of these two to appear was Lilith, the daughter of Dracula. Like her father, she is also a vampire, although her powers and weaknesses differ from most other vampires. She first appeared in Giant-Size Chillers featuring Curse of Dracula #1 (June, 1974) drawn by artist Gene Colan.

The second is a demon sorceress who is known as the "Mother of All Demons". She first appeared in Ghost Rider, Vol. 2, issue 28 (August, 1992).

Publication history

Lilith, the daughter of Dracula, first appeared in Giant-Size Chillers featuring Curse of Dracula #1 (June 1974), and was created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan. Most of her solo appearances were written by Steve Gerber, who would later use a supporting character he created for these stories, Martin Gold, in The Legion of Night.

The character subsequently appeared in Vampire Tales #6 (August 1974), The Tomb of Dracula vol. 1 #23 (August 1974), The Tomb of Dracula vol. 1 #25 (October 1974), #28 (January 1975), Dracula Lives! #10-11 (January-March 1975), Marvel Preview #12 (September 1977), The Tomb of Dracula vol. 1 #60 (September 1977), Marvel Preview #16 (June 1978), The Tomb of Dracula vol. 1 #66-67 (September-November 1978), The Tomb of Dracula vol. 2 #3 (February 1980), 5-6 (June, August 1980), Uncanny X-Men Annual #6 (1982), and her apparent "death" occurred in Dr. Strange vol. 2 #62 (December 1983). She made a posthumous appearance in Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #9 (November 1989).

There are a number of planets or moons whose existence is not supported by scientific evidence, but are proposed by various astrologers, pseudoscientists, conspiracy theorists, or certain religious groups.

Lilith

Lilith is the name given to a hypothetical second moon of Earth, supposedly about the same mass as the Earth's Moon, proposed in 1918 by astrologer Walter Gorn Old, who called himself Sepharial. Sepharial applied the name Lilith from medieval Jewish legend, where she is described as the first wife of Adam. Sepharial claimed that Lilith was the same second moon that scientist Georg Waltemath claimed to have discovered twenty years earlier. Sepharial also claimed to be the first person in history to observe Waltemath's moon as it crossed the sun, and rationalized that it was too dark to be otherwise visually detected.

Sepharial's comments ignored the fact that Waltemath's proposed moon had already been discredited by the scientific community at the turn of the century. There are many readily apparent holes in the arguments supporting Lilith's existence, and the existence of this astronomical object is believed only by fringe groups.

Therion (band)

Therion (formerly Blitzkrieg, Megatherion) is a Swedish symphonic metal band founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. Its name was inspired by the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion. "To Mega Therion" is Greek for "The Great Beast" and was a title used by occultist Aleister Crowley. Originally a death metal band, Therion adjusted its musical style by adding orchestral elements, including choirs, classical musicians, and even a full orchestra at their concert performances. As a result, it has popularized the symphonic metal genre. In their biography, they state they have been cited as "the most adventurous metal band at present".

Therion takes its themes from different mythologies and practices, including occultism, magic and ancient traditions and writings. Thomas Karlsson, the head and founder of the magical order Dragon Rouge, has provided lyrics for the band since 1996.

History

Blitzkrieg and Megatherion (1987–1988)

Therion originated as the band Blitzkrieg in Upplands Väsby, Sweden. In 1987, Christofer Johnsson, who had played bass for three months, teamed up with guitarist Peter Hansson, whom he had met in several musical groups, and drummer Oskar Forss, who was Johnsson's old schoolmate. The band's main influences were Metallica and Slayer, but its sound resembled Venom and Motörhead. The band had only two concerts. In March 1988, it split up after some disagreements with Forss.
