Light (novel)

Light is a science fiction novel by M. John Harrison published in 2002. It received the James Tiptree, Jr. Award and a BSFA nomination in 2002, and was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2003.

Overview

The book centres on the lives of three individuals — the physicist (and serial killer) Michael Kearney, on the verge of a breakthrough in theoretical physics sometime in 1999; Seria Mau Genlicher, the cybernetically-altered female pilot of a "K-ship", and the ex-space pilot and adventurer Ed Chianese. Seria Mau and Ed's stories take place in the year 2400 AD.

The lives of these three individuals are linked in many ways, though most tangibly by the presence of a mysterious creature called The Shrander, who appears in many guises to all three characters throughout the novel (with anagrammatic names of Sandra Shen and Dr. Haends). They are also linked by the Kefahuchi Tract, a space-time anomaly described as "a singularity without an event horizon", an object of awe and wonder that has been the ruin of many civilisations attempting to decode its mysteries.

Window

A window is an opening in a wall, door, roof or vehicle that allows the passage of light and, if not closed or sealed, air and sound.

Modern windows are usually glazed or covered in some other transparent or translucent material. Windows are held in place by frames. Many glazed windows may be opened, to allow ventilation, or closed, to exclude inclement weather. Windows often have a latch or similar mechanism to lock the window shut.

Types include the eyebrow window, fixed windows, single-hung and double-hung sash windows, horizontal sliding sash windows, casement windows, awning windows, hopper windows, tilt and slide windows (often door-sized), tilt and turn windows, transom windows, sidelight windows, jalousie or louvered windows, clerestory windows, skylights, roof windows, roof lanterns, bay windows, oriel windows, thermal, or Diocletian, windows, picture windows, emergency exit windows, stained glass windows, French windows, and double- and triple paned windows.

The Romans were the first known to use glass for windows, a technology likely first produced in Roman Egypt, in Alexandria ca. 100 AD. Paper windows were economical and widely used in ancient China, Korea and Japan. In England, glass became common in the windows of ordinary homes only in the early 17th century whereas windows made up of panes of flattened animal horn were used as early as the 14th century. Modern-style floor-to-ceiling windows became possible only after the industrial plate glass making processes were perfected.

Light (company)

Light is an American digital photography company that has devised a multi-lens and multi-sensor camera that is eventually planned for embedding in smartphones and mobile devices. Its announced product, the L16, is a standalone version with 16 camera modules. The technology is said to be comparable to the quality of DSLR cameras but in a smaller form factor. It plans to eventually provide mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets with higher-quality photo capabilities and true optical zoom. Light recently entered into a deal with smartphone manufacturer, Foxconn, to allow them to sell products that include Light's technology.

History

Light was founded in 2013 by Dave Grannan (CEO) and Rajiv Laroia (CTO) in Palo Alto, California. In June 2014, the company received $9.7 million in Series A funding from an investor group including Bessemer Venture Partners, CRV, and Qualcomm executive chairman, Paul E. Jacobs. Jacobs also joined Light's board of directors per the agreements of his investment deal.

Hope (Ukrainian political party)

The People's Action Party "Hope" (Ukrainian: Партія Народної Дії «НАДІЯ») was founded on 18 March 2005, and has a presence in 27 regions and 525 districts of Ukraine. It is headed by Sergei Selifontiev, who created the "light parliamentary movement" in contrast to what he felt was a shady parliament of the day. On the day of its inception, 1,200,000 citizens of Ukraine joined the party.

Hope is a 2014 French drama film directed by Boris Lojkine. It was screened as part of the International Critics' Week section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival where it won the SACD Award.

Hope (ship)

The Hope was an American brig class merchant ship involved in the Maritime Fur Trade along the northwest coast of North America and discovery in the Pacific Ocean. Earlier the vessel was involved in the slave trade.

Early voyages

Sailing out of Newport, Rhode Island the Hope was involved in bringing Africans to the United States to be sold as slaves as part of the Middle Passage. In 1765, the brig was under the command of Captain Nathaniel Mumford. On March 17, 1765 a revolt occurred on the ship:

There was a passenger revolt aboard the brigantine Hope while it was bringing slaves from the coast of Senegal and Gambia to Connecticut. How did that happen? –Well, the captain, who had beaten several of his crewmen, had been killed and his body thrown overboard, and so the black cargo, seeing such discord among their captors, figured they maybe had a chance. In their revolt they killed one crew member and wounded several others. On this day their revolt was suppressed by killing seven of them.

Kush (band)

Kush was an American rap metal band formed in 2000 by rapper B-Real, Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and former Fear Factory members Raymond Herrera and Christian Olde Wolbers.

History

The project was first announced in 2000. "Dr. Kush" was chosen as an alternate name in case the original band name was already in use. In November 2000, it was reported that seven tracks had been completed. In 2001, B-Real expressed an interest in releasing the band's debut album by the following year or in 2003. Kush performed at the fifth annual Cypress Hill Smoke Out in 2002, opening with a song entitled "Psycho Killer", one of ten completed tracks that were prepared for an eventual album. B-Real stated that the band's music is "unlike any other rap-metal type stuff. It's a little bit more aggressive. And the way I attack it from a lyrical standpoint is totally different from what I do with Cypress. Cypress is more street-orientated. With Kush, it's a little bit of everything." In April 2002, it was reported that Kush had completed its debut album, but that it would be difficult to release because all of the band members were signed to different labels. In November 2002, it was reported that the album was not completed, but that it was getting close to completion. To date, no material from the band has been released officially, but demos have been leaked on various file sharing sites.
