Li Bing

Li Bing (Chinese: 李冰; pinyin: Lǐ Bīng; c. 3rd century BC) was a Chinese administrator and engineer of the Warring States period. He served the state of Qin as an administrator and has become renowned for his association with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, the construction of which he is traditionally said to have instigated and overseen. Because of the importance of this 2000-year-old irrigation system to the development of Sichuan and the Yangtze River region, Li Bing became a great Chinese cultural icon, hailed as a great civil administrator and water conservation expert. In Chinese mythology, he is known as the vanquisher of the River God and is compared to the Great Yu. Dujiangyan is still in use today and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Life and career

King Zhaoxiang of Qin (r. 306–251 BC) dispatched Li Bing as joint military and civilian governor (shou) over Shu, a recently defeated state in Sichuan province, Southwest China, just west of modern Chengdu. According to the Records of the Grand Historian, Li Bing was appointed governor of Shu in c. 277 BC. However, the Chronicles of Huayang place Li Bing in Shu in 272 BC. He arrived just as Zhang Ruo had put down the last of the marquis rebellions and moved out to engage the Chu city of Yan. Zhang Ruo did not leave any incumbent ministers, and Li Bing had complete control over Shu. (Sage, 149) "When he arrived in Shu, Li Bing witnessed the sufferings of local people from frequent flooding of the Min River." Additionally, the Qin monarchy had been sending its exiles to this state and the Qin military needed food and infrastructure.

Li Bing (handballer)

Li Bing (Chinese: 李兵; pinyin: Lǐ Bīng; born January 21, 1980 in Harbin, Heilongjiang) is a female Chinese handball player who competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

In 2004 she finished eighth with the Chinese team in the women's competition. She played all seven matches and scored 15 goals.

Li Bing (footballer)

Li Bing (Chinese: 黎兵; pinyin: Lí Bīng; born 16 March 1969 in Guizhou) is a retired Chinese international football player and currently a manager. In his playing career he was predominantly associated with Liaoning, Guangdong Hongyuan, Sichuan Quanxing and a short loan period with German side Kickers Offenbach. Internationally Li represented China within the 1992 and 1996 AFC Asian Cup before he retired and moved into coaching where he received his first head coach position with Chengdu Blades.

Club career

As a youngster Li was quickly picked up by the Chinese under-23 football team and with them he was allowed to take part in the Chinese football league pyramid where they called themselves China B. He would actually see them win the Chinese league title in the 1989 league season before he had to return to his parent club Liaoning. Upon his return to Liaoning it would coincide with full professionalism and this would seem to bring out the best from him when he went on to personally win the 1994 Chinese Football Association Footballer of the Year award. This would see him as one of the most sought after players within China and big money move to top tier side Guangdong Hongyuan F.C. where he was brought in to help with them with their title push, however while they were close they only finished 4th in the 1995 league season. Unable to improve upon their performances the following season when they finished a disappointing 7th, Li Bing would be sold to Sichuan Guancheng. With them he was able to find a team capable to consistently fighting for the league title, however the best they were able to achieve was 3rd position in the 1999 league season.
