599 Lexington Avenue

599 Lexington Avenue is a 653ft (199m) tall, 50-story skyscraper in New York City, New York designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. It was the first building constructed by Mortimer Zuckerman and his company Boston Properties in New York City. The site was acquired for $84 million in 1984, and completed in 1986.

It is the 52nd tallest building in New York City. The lobby contains Frank Stella's Salto nel Mio Sacco. The property also contains an entry to the Lexington Avenue – 53rd Street subway station (4 6 <6> E M trains).

The building is notable for being completed without an anchor tenant.

100 East 53rd Street

100 East 53rd Street (formerly known as 610 Lexington Avenue) is a residential skyscraper under construction in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building’s architect is Norman Foster of Foster + Partners. Upon completion, it will rise 64 stories or 711 feet (217 m). It was supposed to feature a Shangri-La Hotel and condos but as a result of the financial crisis that began in 2007 and the downturn in the residential real estate market, the building's construction was put on indefinite hold in 2009 and the hotel idea was later abandoned. In March 2012, Aby Rosen and Michael Fuchs of RFR Holding LLC regained control of the site, and announced their intentions to carry on with the project. Excavation work began in early 2014. The building topped out on January 13, 2016. It should be complete by spring 2017, according to a 2015 update. The building will feature 94 condominium units including, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, three-bedrooms, and two four bedroom duplexes.

731 Lexington Avenue

731 Lexington Avenue is a 1,400,000 sq ft (130,000 m²) glass skyscraper on the East Side of Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It houses the headquarters of Bloomberg L.P. and as a result, is sometimes referred to informally as Bloomberg Tower. The building also houses retail outlets, restaurants and 105 luxury condominiums. The residences are known as One Beacon Court and are served by a separate entrance. The tower is the 15th tallest building in New York City and the 46th tallest in the United States. It stands at 55 stories tall, reaching 806 ft (246 m).

Located at 731 Lexington Avenue, the building occupies the same block where Alexander's department store once stood. It opened in 2004.

Construction and design

Construction on 731 Lexington Avenue began in 2001, three years after the vacant Alexander's department store was demolished. The building was developed by Vornado Realty Trust and César Pelli & Associates served as the design architect. The building comprises a full city block between Lexington and Third Avenues and 58th and 59th Streets. The complex features two towers constructed above a steel office and retail section, separated by a seven-story atrium. The residences are known as One Beacon Court and are served by a separate entrance. The design of the courtyard at One Beacon Court, which connects 58th and 59th Streets, was inspired by other historic New York enclosures such as Grand Central Terminal, the reading room of the New York Public Library Main Branch, and the skating rink at Rockefeller Center; glass walls curve around the perimeter of the courtyard, tilting slightly inward as they rise.

Lexington Avenue

Lexington Avenue, often colloquially abbreviated as "Lex," is an avenue on the East Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City that carries southbound one-way traffic from East 131st Street to Gramercy Park at East 21st Street. Along its 5.5-mile (8.9-kilometer), 110-block route, Lexington Avenue runs through Harlem, Carnegie Hill, the Upper East Side, Midtown, and Murray Hill to a point of origin that is centered on Gramercy Park. South of Gramercy Park, the axis continues as Irving Place from 20th Street to East 14th Street.

Lexington Avenue was not one of the streets included in the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 street grid, so the addresses for cross streets do not start at an even hundred number, as they do with avenues which were originally part of the plan.

The portion of Lexington Avenue between 14th and 20th Streets is known as Irving Place.

History

Both Lexington Avenue and Irving Place began in 1832 when Samuel Ruggles, a lawyer and real-estate developer, petitioned the New York State Legislature to approve the creation of a new north/south avenue between the existing Third and Fourth Avenues, between 14th and 30th Streets. Ruggles had purchased land in the area, and was developing it as a planned community of townhouses around a private park, which he called Gramercy Park. He was also developing property around the planned Union Square, and wanted the new road to improve the value of these tracts. The legislation approved, and, as the owner of most of the land along the route of the new street, Ruggles was assessed for the majority of its cost. Ruggles named the southern section, below 20th Street, which opened in 1833, after his friend Washington Irving. The northern section, which opened three years later, in 1836, was named after the Battle of Lexington in the Revolutionary War.
