Lewis Taylor

Andrew Lewis Taylor is a British multi-instrumentalist musician, born in London, UK, in the late 1960s. He started in the music business touring with the progrock band Edgar Broughton Band. In 1986 he began performing as Sheriff Jack, releasing two albums of psychedelia music, Laugh Yourself Awake (1986) and What Lovely Melodies! (1987). As Lewis Taylor, he released his self-titled album in 1996, through Island Records, with tracks including "Bittersweet" and "Lucky" being released as singles. The album showcased a significant departure from psychedelia towards Neo soul and was highly acclaimed in the music press.

In June 2006, Lewis Taylor retired from music. However, as Andrew Taylor, he remains active in the music industry. Taylor has since been musical director and bass player for Gnarls Barkley, and guitarist/backing vocalist for the Edgar Broughton Band and The Drivers.

    Lewis Taylor (Australian footballer)

Lewis Taylor (born 17 February 1995) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). From Mortlake in Victoria, Taylor attended high school at Mercy Regional College, Camperdown. Taylor was drafted by the Lions with their fourth selection, pick 28, in the 2013 AFL Draft. At only 173 cm, he has drawn comparisons with North Melbourne player Brent "Boomer" Harvey due to his ability to cut sides up throughout the middle of the ground with his pace and elite endurance. Despite having an interrupted pre-season due to a foot injury, Taylor played all 22 games for Brisbane in his debut season. He was nominated for the AFL Rising Star in round 9 and at the end of season vote count he won the award, finishing one vote ahead of Marcus Bontempelli.

  • Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

    Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

    Lewis (Middlesex cricketer)

Lewis (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who was associated with Middlesex and made his first-class debut in 1830.
